Company
The Northern Health and Social Care Trust is committed to creating a great place to work for all its staff.
Our Trust recognises the need to nurture a culture of great leadership, support and improvement. The impetus behind creating a great place to work is that it will in turn lead to improved outcomes for patients and users of our services.
Northern Trust services
The Northern Trust has a highly skilled and professional workforce providing acute services at two hospitals – Antrim Area and Causeway – and community-based health and social care services across four localities.
Outpatient services are provided from Antrim Area, Causeway, Whiteabbey, Mid-Ulster, Braid Valley and Moyle Hospitals as well as from a range of community settings such as Ballymena Health and Care Centre.
We also provide a range of inpatient mental health and addiction services at Holywell Hospital and acute mental health inpatient beds at the Ross Thompson Unit in Causeway Hospital.
Antrim Area Hospital
Antrim Area Hospital is one of the busiest hospitals for unscheduled care services in Northern Ireland. The hospital’s state of the art emergency department, which opened in 2013, caters for approximately 90,000 patients per year. In addition, the Hospital has a Direct Assessment Unit where GPs can speak directly with medical staff to receive specialist advice and, if appropriate, to arrange a referral to the unit where treatment can begin immediately. This means people can avoid unnecessary waits in the Emergency Department.
The Hospital has recently opened a Medical Programme Treatment Unit and is developing an Acute Care at Home Model and a new Paediatric Ambulatory Unit.
The hospital has 366 beds available for acute care. In addition, it offers obstetrics, neonatal services, paediatrics, palliative care and renal dialysis, as well as a specialist dental unit.
Causeway Hospital
Causeway Hospital is one of two Northern Trust acute hospitals. The Hospital’s Emergency Department includes an area for patients brought in by ambulance, who require further investigation and treatment but may not need to be admitted to hospital. One of the latest developments at Causeway is a new Direct Assessment Unit specializing in the care of frail, older patients. A multi-agency, frailty project is also underway, aimed at engaging with and improving health and wellbeing of older people.
An Out of Hours GP service is located beside the Emergency Department at Causeway Hospital.
A new state of the art gynaecological unit, The Meadows, opened at Causeway Hospital in 2018.
With support from the Belfast Trust, a Paediatric Day Surgery service was established in Causeway, enabling local children to have surgery quicker and closer to their homes.
Both Antrim Area and Causeway Hospitals are developing medical and surgical ambulatory care models.
