Job Details

Applications are invited for a Consultant Anaesthetist to join a friendly, supportive, and dynamic Anaesthesia department at Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will be based at Leighton Hospital, on the outskirts of Crewe. This location benefits from a great position, surrounded by green fields and close to many charming small towns and villages. The Peak District and North Wales are within easy reach, and there are also good transport connections to Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, and London.

The Trust retained its 'Good' rating by the CQC in April 2020, has a good reputation for research and benefits from some of the very latest clinical facilities.

The Treatment Centre comprises of 4-day case theatres, 5 endoscopy rooms and a recovery area. There are 7 inpatient theatres including one 24 hour a day emergency theatre and an orthopaedic barn theatre.

The award-winning Maternity Department consists of a self-contained midwife led unit with 3 rooms with birthing pools. The delivery suite has 6 standard delivery rooms, 2 theatres and a 2 bedded recovery area.

The spacious Critical Care Unit located adjacent to the theatre suite has recently been expanded. This provides an integrated 18 bedded area with four potential isolation rooms and the ability to cohort into a four-bedded area separate from the main unit.

A Surgical Admission Lounge (SAL) next to theatre admits patients on the day for elective operations.

Main duties of the job

The post is offered on a full time, or job share basis, the job plan being intended for a full-time appointment with an opportunity to modify this if the post is offered on any other basis.

The successful applicant must have full registration with the GMC and continue to hold a Licence to Practise. The applicant must also be on the Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training at the date of interview.

The successful candidate will join a team focused on providing high quality patient care for a diverse range of patients. Duties will include anaesthesia for elective and emergency cases including paediatrics, obstetrics, orthopaedics and general surgery.

This post will contribute to the Consultant Anaesthetist on-call rota and undertake 3 weekend trauma lists a year.

About us

Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT) provides good quality, safe and effective healthcare to the people of Cheshire and beyond. The Trust, which manages Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich, and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford, was established as an NHS Trust in April 1991 and became a Foundation Trust in April 2008.

We employ almost 5,000 members of staff, provide around 540 hospital beds, with a range of services including accident and emergency, maternity, outpatients, therapies, and children's health.

The Trust is also part of Central Cheshire Integrated Care Partnership (CCICP), a unique local health partnership that provides a range of community services for people across South Cheshire and Vale Royal.

Job description
Job responsibilities

There are a variety of surgical lists available, and the post will include paediatric theatre sessions, obstetric sessions and emergency or trauma sessions. Paediatric sessions may be in ENT, dental, ophthalmology, urology or general surgery.

The post comes with 2.0 SPA sessions per week (based on 10 PAs), and active involvement in the governance, educational and quality improvement activity of the department is expected.

There will be opportunities to contribute to all aspects of the departments activities, and those of the wider Trust.

Many Consultants take on additional roles within the Trust and regionally. Within the department we have a Deputy Associate Medical Director, Deputy Undergraduate Tutors, a Course Director for BASICS (the regional core trainee teaching programme), a Chair of a regional Critical Care Group and a Course Director for the regional obstetrics course (EASE) which is run at the Trust.
