Job Details

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we are unexpectedly looking for a 6 session Salaried GP at Glastonbury Surgery from March 2023 – our outgoing colleague has kindly provided the following testimony which we think describes what we can offer to a new or experienced GP here:

“As some general feedback - the things that initially attracted me to apply to Glastonbury were that I had been told it was a very supportive and friendly practice so a good place to be as a newly qualified GP, and that you already have GPs doing the newly qualified fellowship there. Also, that trainees stayed on which is always a good sign, and that it was a fairly large stable and successful practice with good mix of teams (GPs, ANPs, good admin support etc).

When I came for my tour the things that really impressed me were the welcoming and friendly team, from reception to the practice manager and the partners I met at the meeting, and then all the GPs, nurses and HCAs etc I met on my tour with the Deputy PM. Again, as a new GP I was reassured that I felt as a practice you were keen to support and help me develop my career, providing a mentor etc, and also allowing me to focus on settling into life as a new GP without lots of added pressures or additional roles. Also, the modern purpose-built building, conference/meeting room, parking, bee garden, and having my own room were a bonus!

Since starting the positive things have included the coffee meeting each day, so can discuss cases, catch up with colleagues etc, having the catch-up slots was good at the start as well, and having the option to continue them if I had wanted. Also only having half days as the nominated doctor, and the workload being shared between the whole team so don't have that dread of being the "duty doctor" and leaving very late. I do think there is a focus on work life balance which is also positive, and a real culture of support with everybody chipping in on the overflow lists. Easily the biggest selling point though is the team - everybody is genuinely supportive, fun, and really care about each other. I always know I `can just wander into the corridor if I need to ask somebody something and there will be an open door waiting.”

We would welcome informal visits to the practice to meet us and the team – please contact Andrea Ball, Practice Manager to arrange or call for more information; andrea.ball1@nhs.net, 01458 836109 or 07342161988. For application please send a cv and accompanying letter.

We are a Tier 2 Licensed practice.

 The hidden gems of Somerset

One of the larger English counties and yet far from the most densely populated, Somerset has so many surprises waiting to be unwrapped. Those who live here have discovered many hidden gems, the wildflower meadows, beach waterfalls, ancient wells, unique carvings and underground reservoirs.

Think of Somerset and what comes to mind – the things you know such as delicious strawberries, authentic Cheddar cheese and thirst quenching cider. What is lesser known is the fossil hunting on local beaches, miles of mountain biking,  a network of footpaths and byways for walking and horse riding across the County including on the Quantocks   a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and discovering the beauty of the beaches and coastal paths. World-wide, our county is famous for its Glastonbury Festival, illuminated carnivals, and Arthurian Legends.

Somerset borders Devon and Dorset both popular destinations for holidays, short breaks and day trips. For a more urban experience there is Bristol and Bath to the North, and Exeter to the West with plenty of options for museums and galleries, theatres and the diversity of city life. Somerset is the choice for those in search of the ultimate work-life balance, the quiet of the countryside and rural living but within easy reach of the full city experience.

The prolific American writer, John Steinbeck who lived and wrote in Bruton Somerset for a short while said this about it: “Time loses all it’s meaning. The peace I have dreamed about is here.”

Being a GP in Somerset

Being a GP in Somerset will see you working in largely settled but often diverse communities where you can build long-standing relationships with your patients. “I started working in Yeovil in 2001 with 3 young children who have all thrived in the beautiful space and countryside that we have in the West Country, the education locally has allowed them to maximise their potential whilst growing up in a fantastic environment. My wife has worked locally as a Community Paediatrician. We have good rail and road connections so can access the cities if we want but have coast and countryside on our doorstep.

During the Pandemic, low levels of Covid in Somerset and living in a small village made life much easier than living in the city; we have low crime levels and good air quality.

I have worked as a partner for 20 years and am now enjoying the range of GP career options available whilst enjoying the relaxed rural lifestyle, Somerset is a beautiful county and a great place to live whatever stage you are in your career!”
