Job Details

This is a fixed-term locum consultant post required to support service expansion within the paediatric respiratory medicine department. The initial contract will be for 6 months, with the possibility of extending to 12 months. It is anticipated that a substantive post will be approved for open advertisement by the end of this locum post.

The successful candidate will join the clinical team participating in all aspects of paediatric respiratory medicine. The inpatient service is based within the Leicester Children's Hospital (on the Leicester Royal Infirmary site), where the successful candidate will share consultant duties as daytime consultant of the week (1 in 5).

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the provision of the paediatric respiratory service, including:

  • Tertiary paediatric respiratory outpatient clinics (3 per week)
  • Inpatient consultant cover for paediatric respiratory patients, and as part of the shared respiratory consultant of the week daytime rota (1 in 5; 0900 till 1700 Monday-Friday, 0900 till 1300 Weekends)
  • Paediatric flexible bronchoscopy
  • Promote and strengthen links with colleagues in the region (Primary care and local district general hospitals) with a view to increasing formal outreach.
  • The development of a specific interest in areas of respiratory medicine which compliments the interests of the rest of the team will be encouraged.

About us

Leicester Children's Hospital provides paediatric services to the just over one million residents of Leicestershire and Rutland. Tertiary services the Leicester Children's Hospital also attracts patients from further afield. All the general and specialist services, except for cardiac services, are centralised on the Leicester Royal Infirmary site. Cardiac services are based at the Glenfield Hospital site. The Leicester Children's Hospital currently manages around 130 beds and has a budget of over 35 Million. The Children's Hospital team includes more than 50 consultants and sees 13 000 new out-patients annually. The Children's Hospital manages 3000 day case patients and 12 000 emergency patients annually. The Children's Hospital forms part of UHL's Women and Children's Clinical Management Group (CMG).

Job responsibilities

Clinical

  • Provide paediatric respiratory out-patient and in-patient services.
  • Provide consultant-of-the-week cover for paediatric respiratory medicine.
  • Provide respiratory consultant cover for daytime weekday referrals.
  • Work collaboratively with the paediatric respiratory team.
  • Work supportively and collaboratively in the multi-disciplinary team, and participate in the MDT meetings.
  • Ensure and encourage communication between all stakeholders, including patients, parents and carers, members of the multi-disciplinary team and colleagues in the trust and region.
  • Ensure that consistently high standards of care are delivered by example and mentorship.
  • Work effectively with the Clinical Management Group Clinical Quality and Safety co-ordinator to identify and reduce risks, incidents and complaints to ensure that the team learn from such occurrences and to improve patient safety.
  • Actively ensure the appropriate safeguarding of patients.

Education and Training

  • Provide teaching and support of medical students, junior and senior paediatric trainees. This will include ward-based bed-side teaching, seminars, and clinical teaching on ward rounds and in clinics.
  • Provide mentorship, advice, and encouragement for trainees with an interest in paediatric respiratory medicine

Leadership, Management and Administration

  • Undertake managerial duties associated with the care of their patients and the running and development of their clinical department
  • Provide clinical and strategic leadership for their subspecialist area, and support the wider respiratory team to develop the service as needed in order to continually deliver the best care possible for patients
  • Have an understanding of the wider health agenda and modern NHS
  • Engage fully with the Childrens Hospital Strategy and the strategic direction of the wider trust
  • Be able to account for their non-fixed session time - this may be filled with additional teaching, audit research and/or administrative duties

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • MB BS or Equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Evidence of prior experience managing children with complex respiratory disorders and evidence of training at a tertiary respiratory centre
  • Child Protection Level 3
  • APLS

Desirable

  • Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations.
  • Higher degree eg MSc, MD or equivalent
  • Fully Accredited for Higher Specialist Training or will be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of the interview date.

Experince/Clinical skills
Essential

  • Evidence of training in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine
  • Clinical Knowledge and Expertise: Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems; demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach; understands evidence based practice
  • IT Skills, ability to use web browser, excel, word etc..
  • Willingness to develop skills and experience in areas of interest

Desirable

  • Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest.
  • GRID or SPIN training in paediatric respiratory medicine

Motivation
