The Respiratory Team at the Royal Devon & Exeter Foundation NHS Trust has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic trainee to gain experience in Interstitial Lung Disease. The Exeter Interstitial Lung Disease Service is a designated Regional Specialist Centre and an anti-fibrotic prescribing centre serving the South West Peninsula, a population of ~2.5Million. This is a fixed-term post for 6 months (February 2023 to August 2023) and is suitable for either trainees with minimal experience or more senior trainees wishing to consolidate their knowledge and skills. The successful candidate will be encouraged to take an active role in audit, quality improvement and there will be an opportunity to undertake substantial research for interested candidates. There is no commitment to the medical take, unless specifically requested, or unless it is a requirement of the candidates training. Inpatient ward work will be minimal and will support the needs of the ILD service; general respiratory inpatient ward work is optional and for trainees with a dedicated training need.
We are a welcoming and cohesive group of 9 consultants with a broad range of expertise. The department provides a full Respiratory Medicine service for Exeter and surrounding parts of Devon and beyond. It serves a local population of approximately 450,000. It is a busy unit with a wide range of common and uncommon conditions seen. As well as interstitial lung disease, the department has special interests in cystic fibrosis, airways diseases, sleep-related breathing disorders, bronchiectasis, non-invasive ventilation and lung cancer. We are the NHSE Specialised Commissioned Regional Centre for ILD, Cystic Fibrosis, and Asthma. We have a busy sub-regional EBUS service with an integrated pleural and medical thoracoscopy service. We also provide regional clinics for patients with a1 anti-trypsin deficiency.
The Royal Devon & Exeter Foundation NHS Trust delivers the undergraduate programme for the University of Exeter Medical School. We have a vibrant and cohesive Respiratory Research Group that encompasses members from a broad background with strong links to Exeter Universitys College of Medicine and Health, Biosciences, the MRC Medical Mycology Unit, and the Sport & Health Sciences Department.
