The Trust is seeking a speciality doctor to work on acute in patient ward at Hammersmith and Fulham Mental Health Unit. The post holder will work as part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team lead by consultant psychiatrist who is the line manager for the post. The post holder will be based on one ward and work with one team however at times, will be requires to work with other inpatient teams as part of their 10 PA job. Our acute general adult wards focussed on prompt initiation of safe effective treatments, and eliminating all non-clinical delays from our patient pathways

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of an extremely capable ward team, including on-going co-production projects improving physical health care, improving patient experience, and opportunities to develop in-patient care further.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will also work in partnership with multidisciplinary team lead by the team consultant, and will work closely with ward team manager, unit manager and local lead to provide leadership, clinical supervision and development to the multi-disciplinary ward team. They will participate in the multi-disciplinary team providing senior assessments, advice and supervision, and lead ward rounds with the MDT, patients and carers.

Avonmore Ward

The post holder will provide medical cover for Avonmore ward up to 16 beds and work under supervision from the ward consultant. The post holder will be required to deputised for ward consultant during periods of leave.

There are numerous opportunities for working with the MDT on quality improvement projects, supervising trainees, and leading on audits and research projects in conjunction with the R&D department, R&D lead or Quality Improvement team.

The will be ample opportunity for further development and the post holder will actively be encouraged to progress with career. The will part of peer group and will be supported by director of SAS doctors who will give career advise

The post holder will be expected to establish, develop and maintain positive relationships with colleagues in the service line, local services and other interfaces. The service is continually developing, and the configuration of staff and exact details of the post may change in order to facilitate this. It is envisaged that the post holder would always be consulted and involved in any such developments.

There is a junior trainee (CT1-3/GPVTS/FY level) post for each ward and part time ST support in the unit.

The post holder will be expected to provide support to trainee doctors in the team and other members of the team.

Working in partnership with the team manager, unit manager and local lead to provide leadership, clinical supervision and development to the multi-disciplinary ward team.

  • Full participation in the multi-disciplinary team providing senior assessments, advice and supervision.
  • To lead ward rounds with the MDT as required.
  • Take responsibility for the production or supervision reports and attendance at tribunals.
  • To take part in serious untoward incident and complaints reviews as per AMHS rota.
  • To provide leadership and role modelling to the ward, attending de-briefing sessions and reflective practice.
  • To contribute to the Trusts service programme of clinical and medical audit and clinical governance initiatives.
  • To contribute to the wards clinical governance meetings.
  • To contribute to further clinical development of the service. This will include teaching and training.
  • To provide supervision to ward trainees and other doctors.
  • To work with consultant colleagues, the ward manager to ensure policies relevant to inpatient and PICU care are embedded in the delivery of clinical care.
  • To become part of the local senior leadership team attending local bed management or interface meetings, AMHS SMARG, RRP, CIG, and Senior Management Team meetings.
  • To be registered for CPD with the Royal College of psychiatrists and to be up to date with appraisal, revalidation and mandatory training.

Person Specification

  • Criteria MBBS or equivalent medical qualification


  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Additional clinical qualifications


  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment
  • Good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment

Clinical Knowledge

  • Excellent clinical skills in the assessment and management of Acute General Adult Psychiatry
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Excellent knowledge in speciality
  • Knowledge and experience in psychopharmacology as applicable to General Adult Psychiatry


  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
  • Experience in a variety of therapies

Academic Skills and Lifelong Learning

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills or willing to undertake training to improve this
  • Participated or demonstrate willingness to participate in continuous professional development
  • Has actively participated or demonstrate a willingness to participate in clinical audit and quality improvement programmes


  • Experienced in clinical research and / or service evaluation
  • Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit or service improvement e.g. prizes or awards
  • Evidence of improving patient outcomes through service change or audit
