We run a very busy gynaecological oncology service, seeing around 4000 new patients every year. We have six one-stop clinics a week, nurse-led hysteroscopy clinics and colposcopy clinics. Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic we have also been offering remote follow-up clinics for some of our patients in addition to our on-site oncology clinics. The service is also a treatment centre for stage 1a and 1b endometrial cancers and the consultant team currently shares 3 theatre sessions / week. There is a weekly local MDT as well as a separate weekly MDT that runs jointly with our colleagues at the Royal London Hospital which is our tertiary centre.

About us

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

As we recover from Covid-19, we're proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change. We are tackling the backlog in many ways including having super-clinics in the evening and weekends; using state-of-the art diagnostic equipment; and streamlining the way we work.

Job description
Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will join our Gynae-oncology team as the 3rd full time consultant, covering the sickness absence of a colleague. The team is well supported by a fellow, a speciality doctor, two Clinical Nurse Specialists, two MDT co-ordinators, two nurse hysteroscopists and two medical secretaries. The service also of course works closely with the cancer and oncology teams within the Trust and the Imaging and Pathology services.

The Gynae-oncology service faces growing levels of demand for the diagnosis or exclusion of cancer within ever reducing timeframes. As a cancer unit, the majority of the workload is diagnostic although curative treatment is carried out for borderline and grade 1 endometrial cancer. We work closely with our local centre at Barts Health and join their weekly MDM in addition to our own local one.

The Trust is committed to sustaining and advancing the provision of medical, dental, nursing and other professional education and to the delivery of high quality postgraduate and undergraduate training.

The post-holder will be expected to participate fully in the scheduled academic activities:

  • Regular bedside teaching for the Clinical Fellows
  • Journal Club
  • Weekly teaching sessions
  • Monthly morbidity and Mortality meetings
  • Simulation sessions and other courses
  • Yearly session for the weekly Hospital Grand Round
  • Induction and in-house teaching of Medical students and overseas students and trainees.
