We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague who will help to develop the local diabetes and endocrine service. The clinical duties are mainly based at Preston with few clinics at Chorley site.

We also have very well-established links with local primary care trust. The post will also involve general diabetes and endocrine clinics. The successful applicant will have opportunities to develop other interests within diabetes and endocrinology.

We would welcome someone to develop sub-specialist interest in diabetes. We have strong links with paediatrics, obstetrics, vascular surgery, renal and biochemistry department within the hospital to develop specialist service in diabetes that the post holder wants to develop.

Main duties of the job

You would specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Services for the Directorate.

Provide direct input to patients; contribute to multi-disciplinary teams and lead the co-ordination of care for patients within Preston and Chorley Hospitals.

Participate in the Consultant on-call rota at the Preston Hospital with additional cover during a colleague's absence.

Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full-time and ensure that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.

Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.

Develop close links with General Practitioners operating in the area.

Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources.

About us

There is a strong team-based focus with dedicated Diabetes Specialist Team members working between primary and secondary care. There are several joint specialist clinics including diabetes foot, diabetes pregnancy, endocrine pregnancy, gynaecology endocrine and pituitary clinics.

We have a dedicated endocrine specialist nurse, and a full range of dynamic endocrine tests are performed in our investigation unit. There is a Diabetes centre on the Chorley and South Ribble site. At Preston much of the outpatient diabetes work is delivered from the Minerva Centre - a purpose-built facility built into the new stand at Preston North End football ground 10 minutes from RPH.

The Directorate actively supports undergraduate medical education and medical students are linked to Consultant teams. There will be many opportunities for the appointee to become involved in undergraduate teaching.

The appointee will be expected to participate in the active postgraduate teaching programme.The 'Lancashire Chest Centre' has facilities on both hospital sites.

The Trust provides tertiary services in interventional bronchoscopy / thoracoscopy, difficult airways clinic, interstitial lung disease clinic, neurothoracic clinic and sleep related respiratory disorders clinic. There are extensive pulmonary function testing facilities and dedicated respiratory wards on each site.
