Job Details

Hereford provides an excellent broad based training in gastroenterology within a very friendly and supportive department. The weekly timetable given (on page 6 of the job description) for this post is indicative only, and will be adjusted to suit the educational needs of the post holder and any changes inthe departmental service arrangements.

Main duties of the job

Clinical work will include a mixture of ward rounds and out-patient activities. The timetable will be based on a 80:20 split, such that 20% of the time will be allocated for other training opportunities as negotiated with any successful candidates. It would be envisaged these may involve acquiring wider generic skills, but may be related to more a more sub-specialty interest (specific diagnostic training, research etc.)

About us

Wye Valley NHS Trust is a PFI hospital which became fully operational in Summer 2002, replacing facilities delivered on three separate sites. The hospital serves a population of approximately 230,000 from Herefordshire and neighbouring counties. All major DGH specialties are now provided on one site. There is a Frailty assessment Unit, clinical assessment unit and a six bedded cardiac care unit. The acute medical take is undertaken by Acute Physicians Monday to Friday and there are consultants on site for up to 12 hours Saturday and Sunday, the cardiologists provide a daily round on the cardiac care unit and inpatient referral service. The hospital is served by an excellent range of investigative and treatment facilities including modern pathology laboratories, a digital radiology system with spiral CT and MRI scanners, and departments of nuclear medicine, neurophysiology and endoscopy. Most regional services are located in Birmingham. Two consultant neurologists, based in Birmingham, visit Hereford (on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday). In addition, there are regular visits by consultants in renal medicine, GU medicine, thoracic and cardiothoracicsurgery. Paediatric sub-specialties are also served by visiting consultants. Radiotherapy services are based in Cheltenham with regular twice-weekly visits to Hereford by consultant oncologists.

  • Ability to carry out duties as set out in the attached job description competently and subject to any aids and/or adaptations as may reasonably be required.

Qualifications / Training / Experience

  • MRCP (part 1 and part 2 written)
  • Full Registration with the GMC with a Licence to Practise
  • 2 years at FP level and >=2 years at SHO level (or equivalent)
  • Can manage common medical emergencies
  • Evidence of audit or knowledge of audit process
  • Current ALS provider certificate



  • Experience of working in the NHS
  • Extensive specialty experience
  • Have one years experience in a UK NHS hospital setting or similar healthcare system
  • A sub-specialty area of expertise
  • Relevant experience in another specialty
