) Duties of the post

i) ClinicalOther then a fixed General Chest Clinic, there are no fixed inpatient commitments other than procedural, unless covering annual and study leave. The post-holder will be attached to the respiratory team covering the respiratory registrar when they are on annual and study leave.

When covering the middle-grade's leave, the post-holder will be required to be available for outpatient clinics, ward rounds and general ward duties. Supervision of all admissions to the Wards, Clinical investigation, diagnosis and treatment of all patients admitted to General Medical Ward and Central Treatment Suite as well as assisting the Consultants in running the Outpatient Clinics.

The post holder will be required to undertake clinical checking, maintain accurate patients clinical notes, with prompt completion of discharge summaries.

Assist in the teaching and training of Junior Medical Staff and undergraduate students and participate in regular audit meetings.

ii) Hours of Duty

The rota will be a 1:11 Full Shift EWTD compliant rota with1 in 11 weekends - 9am to 9.30pm1in 11 Night - 9pm to 9.30am (split Monday-Thursday and Friday-Sunday or week of nights)The post-holder will be required to provide cover for colleagues on annual leave and study leave.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to gain invaluable hands on experience in Bronchoscopy, EBUS, Thorascopy, drain insertion.

The aim of the appointment is to provide 'intermediate' grade support to the consultant physicians with a special interest in Respiratory Medicine.Other then a fixed General Chest Clinic, The post-holder will be attached to the respiratory team covering the respiratory registrar when they are on annual and study leave being available for outpatient clinics, ward rounds and general ward duties. Supervision of all admissions to the Wards, Clinical investigation, diagnosis and treatment of all patients admitted to General Medical Ward as well as assisting the Consultants in running the Outpatient Clinics. The post will also support the GIM emergency medical on call and attract additional sessions or appropriate banding for a 1:11 rota basis.

Applicants must possess full registration with the GMC and should have completed at least four years full time postgraduate training at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a FTSTA in a relevant specialty, or the candidate should have equivalent experience and competencies. Full MRCP is desirable). suitable applicants will be at least at level of expertise required for sitting PACES component of MRCP with evidence of prior NHS experience.

About us

In PPH, there are 163 medical beds and Day hospital plus a modern and fully monitored Coronary Care Unit of 4 beds under the care of the Physicians closely linked to a 5 bedded critical care unit under the joint operational control of a Consultant Anaesthetists and Consultant Physicians.

In April 2016 the new AMAU/MIU opened after 3 years development. This new unit is a modernisation of how emergency services are delivered in Llanelli. Patients with acute medical emergencies are seen directly by the medical team in a consultant-led approach to ensure earlier assessment and management. This has provided improved efficiency in seeing patients, and also training for the junior doctors. The post holder will have an integral part in the ongoing development of the new services.

Job responsibilities

The respiratory ward consists of 22 beds and a fully functional Clinical Procedure Room for pleural procedures. The procedure room also will be having Polysomnography installed soon. There is also the newly opened state of the art Clinical Research Unit. The post-holder will have the opportunity to develop interventional pulmonology skills including advanced bronchoscopy techniques such as electro-cautery tumour de-bulking, endo-bronchial stent / valve insertion, Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS), tunneled drain insertion, advanced USS techniques such as USS guided biopsies of lung masses / supra-clavicular nodes and medical thoracoscopy. The majority of this will be in Prince Philip Hospital, however, EBUS and Thoracoscopy are performed in Glangwili Hospital.

All clinical staff are accountable and responsible for their own clinical competence and should limit their actions to those for which they are deemed competent. Clinical staff are also required to comply with the requirements of their professional organisation regarding supervision.

You would work in both the acute, secondary care setting and in the community supporting the innovative and exciting work occurring outside the acute hospital. You would also take part in the acute medical in-patient service for all adult age groups and be part of the General Medical on-call rota (this role being currently 1 in 11)

Supervision and training of junior staff will be part of the role as well as mentoring medical students from both Swansea and Cardiff Medical Schools. Many of the current physicians in Hywel Dda have honorary roles within the post-graduate medical school at Swansea University.
