Job description
Job responsibilities

Appointees will be expected to agree a job plan which includes (on a full time basis and subject to job planning) at least 8.5 direct clinical care PAs. A standard anaesthesia list is assessed as taking 1.25 PAs for its completion, including preoperative and postoperative work as necessary, or 2.5 PAs for a whole day. This is increased to 3.125 PAs for some neurosurgical, urology, orthopaedic and gynaecology lists. It should be noted that the Trust is working towards 2.5 session lists (3.125 PA) throughout theatres. In two to three years, it is anticipated that most theatre lists will follow this pattern and job plans will be expected to evolve and include evening sessions.

Clinical commitments may be required at University Hospital or the St Cross Hospital, Rugby and it is expected that the clinical commitments will be delivered flexibly. Subspecialty interests will be considered but will depend upon availability. The final job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the Clinical Director.

There will be 1.5 PAs per week initially for supporting professional activity (SPA). SPA would include administration, teaching, mentoring, appraisal, CPD, audit, governance and other activities as agreed during the job planning process. SPA forms a key part of the job plan and the post holder agrees to account for the time spent on these contracted duties, and SPA outcomes, at job planning and at appraisal. The post holder will be expected to agree SPA objectives as part of job planning with the clinical director.

Flexible sessions and annualised flexible sessions are strongly encouraged so that colleagues can cover one anothers leave and have the added advantage of enabling consultants to maintain their skills and to have some variability. These sessions should contribute significantly to the job plan.
