Job Details

Bangor ED's Clinical Fellow posts are the original and best year out of training. These posts offer the opportunity to live on the doorstep of Snowdon and Anglesey and gain an appreciation of the challenges of rural EM that city training can never prepare you for.

The posts are open to all those with experience equivalent to ACCS (including international applicants) and at least 5 years' post-graduation training. We offer a flexible annualised rota with the option of working less than full-time. These posts provide 44 days of development time over 12 months, plus 22 days of SPA (pro-rata for those working less than full-time).
  • PHEM posts are designed to be the perfect 'prep school' for later PHEM sub-speciality training. You'll undertake shifts with Welsh Ambulance and EMRTS, the Welsh HEMS service (
  • Our Medical Education option offers a generous 50% time devoted to medical education. This primarily involves teaching medical students (3rd and final years from Cardiff and Swansea), but there are also opportunities to reach paramedic students, Advanced Practice MSc students (nursing and paramedic) and junior doctors - and we throw in the option of a fully funded PGCertMedEd for MedEd Fellows staying 12 months. You will also have the opportunity to hone your simulation teaching skills both in the hospital sim suite and in the department.
  • Global EM and Quality Improvement are our newest options. They're more specialized - please read the Job Description carefully.

Main duties of the job

Our original Clinical Fellow posts (EM with PHEM) were created in 2011 and quickly became a roaring success. They were originally intended to provide a fun yet productive 'year out' after ACCS, with the added attraction of pre-hospital activities. However, pre-hospital Emergency Medicine doesn't appeal to everyone who might enjoy a year as part of our team, so we now offer several different varieties of our Clinical Fellow programme:
  • Medical Education (including Simulation)
  • Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine
  • Global EM (with MedEd) - with 2nd year option
  • NEW Quality Improvement

All our Clinical Fellow posts are designed to enable the post-holder to start / consolidate EM Middle Grade responsibilities in the well-supported environment of a friendly rural DGH, with the added bonus of living in a glorious part of North Wales, sandwiched between Snowdonia National Park and the Isle of Anglesey.

Almost 25% of the job plan is spent doing your choice of activity (+ SPA), with the majority of the job being a Middle Grade in our thriving little ED. Our tertiary units are around 100 miles away, so it is rare for our ED to be bypassed, and - unlike many urban DGHs - we have kept most of our major trauma.
