This is a fixed term contract for 6 months with a view to extend to 12 months, subject to mutual agreement.

Main duties of the job

  • Organising the distribution of work on the ward among junior doctors including the junior doctor rota.
  • Supervising junior doctors in their day to day work
  • Assisting Consultants in their ward round by contributing to discussing cases during the ward round and proposing ideas
  • Actively participating in the management of acutely unwell or complex patients on the ward
  • Leading the morning MDT under Consultant supervision
  • Liaising with a range of different specialties across the hospital and community to ensure safe and timely patient care.
  • Liaising with patients next of kin ensuring good communication.
  • Building good relationships with your ward team.
  • Teaching junior doctors (especially new members of the team) as well as medical student and physician associates
  • Taking part in audits and actively getting involved in research opportunities
  • Attending clinical governance meetings, morbidity, and mortality meetings on a monthly basis, as well as weekly departmental discussion of complex cases.
  • Attending weekly departmental teaching.

About us

General Internal Medicine is looking for enthusiastic individuals to work closely with our team. The appointment of new ST Higher posts will further consolidate the service and eventually provide the opportunity to expand. Further Consultant recruitment and input will potentially attract more Deanery trainees to support the inpatient service.

The acuity of the patients fluctuates, thus providing a thriving environment to learn and develop skills across general internal medicine. The number of new admissions seen per day is 4-5 on average. The ward is supported by a robust MDT team, including established nursing teams, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy, dietician and other allied health care professionals.

Job responsibilities

Doctors working in general internal medicine (GIM) are responsible for diagnosing and treating a wide spectrum of clinical problems, ranging from the acute severely ill young person to elderly patients with multiple complex comorbidities.

Person Specification
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & SPECIAL TRAINING
Essential

  • Basic: MB BS or equivalent
  • Basic: Holds GMC licence to practice at time of application
  • Postgrad: Degree/diploma e.g., MRCP

Desirable

  • Basic: ALS/ACLS or equivalent
  • Postgrad: Studying towards Part 1 of higher qualification

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
Essential

  • Completed pre-registration year
  • Experience of basic life support and resuscitation skills
  • Broad understanding of GIM
  • Acute GIM experience

Desirable

  • Wide medical experience
  • Familiarity with the NHS
  • Previous experience of a six-month post in the NHS
  • Evidence of understanding and application of knowledge

APTITUDE & ABILITIES
Essential

  • Organisational and communication skills
  • Good oral and written presentation skills
