Applications are invited to join the Medical Directorate at Royal Glamorgan Hospital. Applicants must have full registration and be either on the GMC Specialist Register, hold a CCT or be within six months of obtaining a CCT by the interview date.

The successful applicant will be expected to be responsible for and provide care for General (Internal) Medicine Patients and Care of the Elderly patients.

The Royal Glamorgan Hospital is the base hospital for the southern half of Cwm Taf Health Board. It is a District General Hospital, commissioned in November 1999, serving a population of approximately 185,000 in the Rhondda Taf Ely locality.

There are strong links with the academic unit at the University of Wales College of Medicine. Undergraduate students are attached to the Department of Medicine throughout the year. The successful applicant will be expected to be involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and will be encouraged to undertake research and audit.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to help and develop a General (Internal) Medicine model. This new post will provide input into patients defined as Grey or under General (Internal) Medicine. The post holder will rotate with Care of the Elderly Physicians to maintain their special interest.

We would encourage a dually registered candidate i.e. any speciality with GIM registered in GMC Specialist register. We will incorporate sessions in the job plan for the candidate to pursue speciality interest. Although all specialities are welcome, we are keen for any candidate, who along with GIM is registered in Neurology or Care of the Elderly

The successful candidate will work as part of the acute medicine team at the front door of the Royal Glamorgan Hospital to provide senior experienced clinical leadership. When required, the post holder will also provide senior medical advice and support to junior medical team/specialist nurses and GPs.

Person Specification
  • Experience of supervising Foundation Trainees, Internal Medicine trainees and Speciality Trainees Ability to teach clinical skills Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine (GIM) or Entry to the GMC Specialist Register via the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).
  • At least 2 years' experience in General Internal Medicine in a middle grade/senior clinical role. Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of complex medical problems Experience of participating in MDT working Ability to manage and lead a multidisciplinary team including junior doctors and therapists Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Ability to run an efficient and effective acute service Ability to organise and manage care of patients within both Acute unit and outpatient areas Experience of audit
