Job description
Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will join our team at a very exciting time. We are transforming the Paediatric model at Nuneaton to put team working and career development at the heart of our service. Our vision is to provide first class consultant-delivered care to the children and families of Nuneaton and North Warwickshire. There are 3 posts available, and the candidate will work alongside the existing 5 consultant Paediatric colleagues as well as 6 middle grade doctors, 8 tier one staff, and 3 advanced nurses in an integrated multi-professional model of care

A good general Paediatric and Neonatal background is the priority and practical skills are essential. Special interests to complement the team are welcomed. Additionally the opportunity exists for on-the-job development of special interests if desired.

To enable the delivery of this style of care consultants are resident on call at night at the weekend. During the week the middle grade tier are resident on site with the consultant available from home after 21.30. There is also a tier one of junior doctors and physicians associates as well as rostered support from advanced clinical practitioners both in Paediatrics and neonatal care. The resident nature of the evening and night work provides for substantial time off during the week because daytime activity is adjusted accordingly - detailed in the example work schedule below.

Acute Paediatric Service

There is no Paediatric inpatient ward at Nuneaton and ambulances convey directly to UHCW hospital. There is an ambulatory service at George Eliot via a dedicated Childrens Assessment Unit with pathways for ED care, urgent care and Paediatric care streamed on arrival at triage. Development of a Short Stay Assessment Unit for specific conditions is being actively explored as the next phase of service development. Transfer for inpatient Paediatric care to UHCW is via a well-developed pathway. Children arriving through the walk-in service occasionally become critically ill, the resuscitation team at GEH liaises with the KIDS PICU retrieval team in these circumstances and a bespoke plan is made for transfer. A shared transfer policy for Paediatrics, ED and anesthetics is in place for these circumstances.

Neonatal service

There is a SCBU caring for babies from 32/40 gestation up to term and receiving babies for step-down care from LMNS partner hospitals. Within the maternity department there are approximately 2,200 births a year and 300 admissions to SCBU which has 8 cots. The unit is part of the South West Midlands Neonatal Network and the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Maternity and Neonatal Service. Babies who require LNU or NICU care are transferred either in-utero or after delivery within this LMNS. The regional Neonatal Transport Service conveys these babies.

Outpatient service

There is a robust outpatient clinic service in place for general Paediatric, specialty and surgical clinics. Demand from the growing local population is increasing and this model allows the expansion of the clinic service. The inclusion of middle grade doctors and advanced practitioners in clinics is envisaged.

Supporting Professional Activities

The role is a 10PA contract with up to 2.5 SPAs available for each post holder depending upon the additional roles undertaken. All consultants will be expected to be supervisors for the middle grade and tier one staff and will have time in the job plan to do this. Additional roles such as education lead, governance lead and clinical lead will attract specific SPA time. The rota is designed to facilitate multiprofessional education and management meetings to take place on Wednesdays with a rolling programme of clinical education, simulation training, business meetings and governance meetings.
