The purpose of this post is to provide broad and detailed knowledge, skills and expertise to the Department of Emergency Medicine, at senior level, throughout the 24 hours. It is also to maintain the potholders' own personal and professional development, and to assist that of the ST1/2/3 tier, Foundation Doctors and Nurse Practitioners.

Specialty Doctors are registered practitioners in a career grade. Their post is to provide immediate support and advice to the ST1/2 and Foundation doctors, and to acquire, maintain and develop all of the knowledge, skills and competencies of the Emergency speciality. Speciality Doctors are expected to possess all of the competencies expected from a specialty doctor, and are responsible to assist the consultant grade in the direct supervision of ST1/2/3 and Foundation doctors sharing their shift.

The department will also support CESR with secondment and development opportunities.

Main duties of the job

This is not an approved training position, however you will receive the following; - Named educational supervisor - Induction and bespoke new starter induction pack outlining internal training courses/opportunities available to doctors in these non-approved training positions - Individual training plan - NHS e-portfolio (Division will fund but needs to be in contract that it will be recovered if leave before agreed end of contract) - Appraisal at 6 months and individual access to e-appraisal system - Support towards obtaining Alternative Certificate confirming achievement of foundation competencies to aid those who want to access a recognised training position in the future. The successful candidate will be a key member of an enthusiastic team of medical staff providing a quality service to a busy department.

You will participate in a rota of 11 along with other middle grade doctors to provide 24 hour support and supervision to the Specialty Training and Foundation Doctors and Nurse Practitioners in post.

The department deals with approximately 89,000 new patients per annum. You should have full registration with the GMC and shall have completed at least 4 years post graduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least 1 of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty, or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.

Specific components of the role include: -

To work with colleagues in the same grade to provide perpetual support and supervision to junior medical staff at night, in the evening, and at weekends as well as during the standard working week.

To take advice whenever necessary from the departments Consultants and, at all other times, adhere to the departments established protocols and policies.

To assist the ST1/2/3 and Foundation Doctors in the provision of prompt, efficient and effective care to all of the patients who attend this busy department.

To follow a plan of personal professional development under the guidance of the departments Consultants and the Head of Department.

To assist the departments Consultants in the training and Continuous Professional Development of the ST1/2/3 and Foundation Doctors and in their continuous performance review.

To participate in the audit, research and teaching activities of the department.

To acquire, maintain and develop the knowledge and skills required for the successful conduct of all of these responsibilities. The post holder will have a Consultant Mentor.


The post holder will maintain registration for Continuing Professional Development with the Royal College of Emergency Medicine.

  1. Emergency Medicine Directorate

Housed in a purpose built Department, completed in 2001, the Emergency Department is based at the Victoria Hospital, Blackpool and provides services to the population of Blackpool Wyre and Fylde.

The department receives all unheralded emergencies and is a Major Trauma Unit seeing in excess of 89,000 patients per year. There is some seasonal fluctuation in attendance as Blackpool is a popular seaside resort attracting many visitors and holiday makers throughout the year.

  • 12 months specialty experience in Emergency Medicine

Desirable

  • Evidence of achievement of CT1/2/3 ACCS Emergency Medicine competences. Or Evidence of 36 months training in CT1/2/3 levels in all specialties that make up the ACCS and CT3 Emergency medicine programme.
