The Research Director will liaise closely with the UHB Executive Medical Directorand Associate R&D Director, and Bangor University Dean of College of HealthSciences. It is expected that the role holder will work with a College level team atBangor University to support delivery that would include the College and SchoolDirectors of Research, as well as others that reflect the research vision of theUniversity. It is expected that the role holder will research active and REF returnable,with a track record of grant capture and publications

Main duties of the job

It is an exciting time in North Wales. The North Wales Medical School based at Bangor University serves the entire region and has been operating for 3 years, recently receiving a pledge for expansion from Welsh Government. The North Wales Clinical Research Facility (CRF) has recently commenced operations with the mission of further developing clinical research in the region.

In the context of these significant developments, we are seeking a Director of Research, a visible and passionate leader who will be fully committed to the integration of academic (preclinical, implementation, public health, basic science) and clinically-focused research across North Wales.

We are seeking an individual with experience in research leadership in both Higher Education and the NHS to lead, develop and maintain these partnerships. They will command high credibility in the research communities in both the academic and clinical organisations in order to lead the development of a strategy for medical and clinically-focused research that positively influences clinical treatment and practice. Applicants who can support the growth of clinical trial activity in North Wales are encouraged. We are particularly interested in someone with the enthusiasm to promote collaboration and research across the diversity of medical, clinical and academic domains, including research translation from the bench to the bed.

About us

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) is the largest health organisation in Wales, with a budget of 1.7 billion and a workforce of over 19,000 staff. The Health Board provides primary, community, mental health and acute hospital services for the population of North Wales.

BCUHB provides a full range of primary, community, mental health, acute and specialist hospital services across 3 acute hospitals, 22 community hospitals and a network of over 90 health centres, clinics, community health team bases and mental health units. BCUHB also coordinates or provides the work of 113 GP practices and the NHS services provided by dentists, opticians and pharmacists across the region.

Qualifications and Education
Essential
  • Academic and/or clinical qualifications and experience commensurate with an appointment at professorial/ reader grade and NHS Consultant/ GP appointment
  • Full GMC Registration / Inclusion on the relevant GMC Specialist Register plus a license to practice.
  • Certificate of Completion of Training in relevant speciality (or be within 6 months of obtaining) or equivalent specialist accreditation.
  • A higher degree, e.g. PhD/MD, or exceptionally, a commitment to complete such a degree after appointment
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
  • A detailed understanding of the biomedical and life sciences research funding environment in Wales, the UK and beyond.
  • Proven ability to think strategically, as well as experience of seeing projects through from inception to completion.
  • A proven track record and portfolio of high quality human or health-related research aligned with areas of strength to the Health Board and University, evidenced by influential publications and competitively awarded research funding together with a proven record of contributing, developing and leading successful research bids.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of the key issues concerning clinical and research governance, good clinical practice criteria, ethics, regulation and the principles relating to Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property in a research setting
  • Established national and a growing international reputation within academic field
  • Demonstrable experience and ability of working in a role that requires co-ordination of complex and activities and interaction involving a variety of stakeholders and organisations., together with proven experience of developing personal and professional networks within and beyond the employing organisation
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills, and the ability to prioritise among competing claims on time and resources
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with ability to articulate strategic priorities, with well-developed influencing skills.
Desirable
  • A postgraduate qualification in project or business management, or equivalent
  • An understanding of the dynamics of the relationships between academic departments, the wider University, the NHS, groups and individuals, showing sensitivity to differences in priorities. A commitment to engaging with the history, culture and language of Wales
  • Evidence of collaborations with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations.
