Recognising the importance of preventing and responding to a range of hazards, a devolved Welsh Government has prioritised significant investment for the development of our National Health Protection Service. Building on our strengths, and working closely with wider partners, we are transforming our services to deliver a world-class service for the prevention, management and control of health protection threats.

To complement our existing teams, Public Health Wales is seeking to appoint highly motivated, enthusiastic Public Health Specialists to the positions of Consultant in Environmental Public Health at 1.0 WTE on a 12-month secondment both within the Health Protection Division.

The Environmental Public Health Service aims to protect and improve health in relation to environmental harms and benefits, as well as prevent harms from environmental hazards. It delivers reactive services in line with requirements of the Civil Contingencies Act, responding to a wide range of environmental events whilst working with multi-agency partners to protect the people of Wales. As part of the team, you will provide specialist advice and input on the management of environmental public health issues, leading on he response to incidents as required, including proactively addressing the environmental determinants of health, air quality, sustainable transport, contaminated land and water.

The national Health Protection teams support the seven Health Boards across Wales in discharging their statutory responsibilities for health protection, and work closely with the Directors of Public Health. In addition, and by agreement with the Director of Health Protection, you will have the opportunity to support a defined portfolio area working on an all-Wales basis. This may include sessions with the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre providing strategic leadership for surveillance, field epidemiology, research and training.

Candidates must be included on the GMC Specialist Register in Public Health, Microbiology or Infectious Diseases Medicine, or UK Public Health Register for Public Health Specialists.

The successful candidates will be appointed to the Medical and Dental Consultant salary scale (£86,063 - £111,732) or if from a background other than medicine to NHS Agenda for Change Band 9 (£95,135 - £109,475).
