Job Details

Required to fill this full time replacement post to support the rapidly expanding supra-regional adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) service at Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust (LTHT). This post is managed in the Childrens Services Clinical Service Unit (CSU) with strong links with the adult cardiology department.

The ACHD service in LTHT caters for in excess of 5000 patients over the age of 16 years born with congenital heart disease. We are a supra regional specialist centre covering a population of 5.5 million.

Main duties of the job

This post will have a significant commitment to sub-speciality congenital cardiac MRI and the post-holder will be responsible for supervising, reporting and presenting data at the MDT meetings and supporting management decisions based on the MRI findings

The congenital cardiac services department currently comprises 10 consultant paediatric cardiologists and 5 adult congenital cardiologists. There are 4 congenital cardiac surgeons who work closely with the cardiologists. In addition there is a cardiac radiologist and a consultant echosonographer.

The successful applicant should possess Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.

Applicants should have established skills in adult congenital heart disease and its related specialties including congenital cardiology MRI. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.

Job responsibilities

This is a 10PA post to support the rapidly expanding supra-regional adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) service at Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust (LTHT). This post is managed in the Childrens Services CSU with strong links with the adult cardiology department.

The ACHD service in LTHT caters for in excess of 5000 patients over the age of 16 years born with congenital heart disease. We are a supra regional specialist centre covering a population of 5.5 million. The ACHD service currently delivers around 100 surgical procedures, 130 interventional catheter procedures and 3500 out-patient attendances pa.

The team is highly motivated and committed to developing excellent services for patients, and the expectations of all members of the multi-disciplinary team are high. The successful candidate will be allocated a mentor from within the department who will offer continuous support and development.

To provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient services for the expanding population of adult patients with congenital heart disease within the region.

To provide a 1:5 on call service for adult congenital cardiology patients.

To contribute a significant commitment to sub-speciality congenital cardiac MRI and be responsible for supervising, reporting and presenting data at the MDT meetings and supporting management decisions based on the MRI findings

To provide advice and support to other medical staff caring for patients in other hospitals within the region

To assist in the specialist training programme in ACHD in Leeds

To help support / deliver appropriate training for specialist trainees.

To participate in multi-disciplinary patient management meetings within congenital cardiology

To participate in multi-disciplinary clinical governance meetings and audit programme within congenital cardiology

To support / develop appropriate research interests that will benefit the clinical services provided.

To work collaboratively with colleagues and the clinical management team to ensure the continued development and delivery of services.

Person Specification
Experience
Essential

  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Adult Congenital Cardiology.
  • Specifically, must demonstrate higher specialty training in congenital cardiac MRI.
  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.

  • *Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.

Training, Research, Teaching & Audit
Essential

  • Should have completed a recognised training programme in Adult Congenital Cardiology.
  • Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
  • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.

Desirable

  • Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
  • Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.

Qualifications
Essential

  • MB BS or equivalent qualification.
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent post graduate qualification.

Desirable

  • Relevant higher degree.
