Job Details

The Emergency Department (ED) is a small-medium friendly department seeing approximately 64,000 adult and paediatric patients per year. An exciting opportunity has arisen for two enthusiastic Specialty Doctors to join the multi-disciplinary ED team with a chance to be part of the bespoke training programme for completion of Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) to become an Emergency Medicine Consultant in the UK.

The post is permanent or can be fixed term. The rota is an extremely flexible annualised rota. The pattern of work is tailored to individual requirements to ensure sustainable working and good work life balance. A full-time specialty doctor works 10 sessions per week with 8 clinical sessions and 2 non-clinical sessions. Each specialty doctor has a key role to play in the department as part of the non-clinical sessions and this time is also used to aid further development of the individual. The CESR programme will require enthusiasm and motivation and we will provide you with the guidance, support and opportunities. The successful candidate will have a programme developed to suit their individual needs. Further information regarding CESR can be found on the RCEM website.

Annualisation, self-rostering and PAs:

Each specialty doctor has a key role to play in the department as part of the non-clinical sessions and this time is also used to aid further development of the individual. The pattern of work is tailored to individual requirements to ensure sustainable working and good work life balance. Annual leave and bank holidays are included in the annualisation. Part time work is also considered since the rota can support any number of sessions.

Induction:

Time is allocated on the rota for ED induction during the first week, mandatory training and also corporate induction (quarterly). The first four to six weeks of employment will allow for a working pattern to aid with ensuring familiarity with working in the department with appropriate supervision.

Study and Training:

The department runs regular teaching sessions in the Clinical Skills Training Unit with weekly multi-disciplinary team resuscitation training. We run a weekly teaching programme face to face and via Teams. We run regular Resus drills with the ITU team. Every specialty doctor is allocated an educational supervisor who will provide mentoring, support and direction on developing a personal development programme tailored to the successful candidates needs.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake annual appraisals in line with the national revalidation requirements. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake Continuing Medical Education (CME), attending appropriate courses as necessary. The clinical supervisor will provide guidance on courses which will be identified through supervisor meetings and appraisal, and supported through job planning. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to undertake audit and service improvement projects. These are usually in collaboration with other staff in the department to ensure wider team engagement in improvements.

Clinical Governance:

The appointee will be required to attend an appropriate induction session and Mandatory Training sessions as described above. The successful candidate should actively support all aspects of clinical governance, involving themselves in audit, quality improvement, risk management and when necessary, incident reporting.

Essential
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice
  • MBBCh/MBBS/relevant medical degree
  • Eligibility to work and live in the UK
  • Advanced Life Support Provider
  • Minimum of 4 years work post registration
  • Minimum of 2 years working in Acute specialties: Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine, Anaesthetics or ITU with at least 12 months in Emergency Medicine in the UK

  • Advanced Life Support or equivalent instructor
  • FRCEM Primary and Intermediate
Knowledge

  • Broad experience in Emergency Medicine
  • Good clinical knowledge, acumen and judgement
