Job Details

King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit 2 dynamic and enthusiastic substantive consultants in Oral & Maxillofacial surgery. The successful candidates will have a special interest in trauma, orthognathic, salivary gland, TMJ and skin surgery.

The post holder will have a commitment to high quality patient care, innovative service models, delivery of performance targets, and excellence in education/training and clinical research and audit.

Main duties of the job

This is a full time post (10 PAs) which entails the care of OMFS patients across South-East London and Kent. The post-holder will agree a detailed job plan including personal and professional objectives once in post, involving elective theatre and outpatient sessions across all King's sites.

Applications are invited from accredited specialists in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery who are on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of attaining the CCT or equivalent at interview stage. Applicants must be registered with the General Medical Council and hold an appropriate higher surgical qualification and preferably should also be registered with the General Dental Council.

The role is included in a 1:8 on-call rota which includes weekend / out of hours

Job description
Job responsibilities

  1. Together with the other clinical staff, to provide a service for all Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery patients at Kings. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.
  2. Shared responsibility with the other Consultants for providing 24 hour, 7 day a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
  3. Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
  4. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical & Dental Education and clinical governance initiatives.
  5. Responsible for out-patient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed by the Clinical Lead for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and the Ambulatory Care Divisions management team.
  6. To contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.
  7. To lead the departments Audit and Clinical Governance Programme, chairing the trusts monthly local audit meeting, and attending the care groups monthly clinical governance meeting.
  8. To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Dental Divisions Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
  9. To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery services.
  10. To exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
  1. To work in conjunction with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for junior colleagues.
  2. To undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Clinical Director and Divisional Manager.
  3. To be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. To undertake annual training/updates in infection prevention and control.
  4. To be accountable for implementation of the Code of Practice within own department/area of responsibility.
  5. To prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence based practice and maintaining patient safety.
  6. You have a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of yourself, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.
  7. You are required to observe the rules, policies, procedures and standards of Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.
  8. You are required to observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.
  9. You are required to be responsible, with management support, for your own personal development and to actively contribute to the development of colleagues.
  10. The post holder has an important responsibility for and contribution to make to infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role. These requirements are set out in the National Code of Practice on Infection Control and in local policies and procedures which will be made clear during your induction and subsequent refresher training. These standards must be strictly complied with at all times.
  11. All employees must hold an '' email account which will be the Trust's formal route for email communication. You are therefore required to check this regularly and to deal with such communication promptly.

Person Specification
  • GMC/GDC registerable medical and dental qualifications
  • Eligible for or holding full registration with the United Kingdom General Medical Council (GMC)
  • On the GMC Specialist Register in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery or within 6 months of eligibility for inclusion
  • Eligible for or holding full registration with the UK General Dental Council (GDC)
  • Successful completion of an SAC-approved 5-year minimum training programme in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, or within 6 months of completion, or an equivalent completion of training which is recognised by the GMC
  • Possession of a Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCT in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Applicants who are Nationals from another European country or elsewhere overseas would have to show equivalence to the 5-year training period in the NHS required for the speciality.
  • Pre or post CCT fellowship
  • Experience in day to day organisation of OMFS services in a busy Teaching Hospital
  • Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes nationally and locally. A clear understanding of NHS strategies and policies, and the opportunities and challenges they present to an NHS Acute Trust.
Management and Leadership
  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams A willingness to guide and advise care group colleagues in developing their service whilst acknowledging their individual responsibility for such matters within the group.
  • Clear appreciation of the advantages and limitations for clinical practice of the present system for the provision of healthcare, coupled with proven capacity for the effective management of staff.
  • Management course and/or qualification
  • A clear understanding of NHS strategies and policies, and the opportunities and challenges they present to an NHS Acute Trust.
  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit. Must have undertaken and completed full cycled audit projects
Research and Publications
  • Publication of relevant review articles or case reports in refereed journals
  • Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Higher research degree (PhD/MD)
  • Experience of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and training at an appropriate level
  • Teaching skills course/qualification
