An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join our specialist palliative care services within Central Lancashire. This is a substantive consultant post with sessions split between the hospital specialist palliative care service and the hospice inpatient service. The hospital sessions are based at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, who are also the employing organisation. The hospice inpatient sessions are based at St Catherine's Hospice, Preston.
The post holder will also work closely with colleagues in palliative care across Central Lancashire, supporting the delivery of Specialist Palliative Care within the hospital, hospice and community settings, including the provision of cross-cover for consultant colleagues when needed and supporting the on-call provision based at St Catherine's Hospice.
Main duties of the job
- Provide specialist medical advice/clinical input alongside the existing Consultant in Palliative Medicine as part of the inpatient liaison service, including direct clinical care in inpatient settings as well as advice to colleagues.
- Provide clinical support to the Palliative CNS team through MDT meetings, telephone advice and joint reviews.
- Provide senior medical input into the care of hospice inpatients including ward rounds, advice to medical staff and the wider MDT, supervision of admissions during hospice inpatient sessions.
- Provide Specialist Palliative Care representation at cancer/non-cancer disease specific MDT's
- Undertake a palliative medicine out-patient session
- Working with colleagues across hospital and hospice services to provide clinical, operational, and strategic leadership.
- Attend directorate audit/governance meetings and Specialist Palliative/End of Life Care, Bereavement and Donation business meetings.
- Support the delivery of multi-professional education and training in both LTHTR and St Catherine's.
- Provide cover for colleagues where necessary across the hospital, community and hospice services.
- Support the delivery of palliative care services out of hours by participating in a 1 in 5 non-residential on call rota.
About us
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust forms one of the major acute Trusts in the North West with all the main specialties. We are the tertiary centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria in the departments of neurosciences, renal medicine, oncology, plastic surgery and burns. Undergraduate medical student teaching commenced here in 2003 and considerable opportunities exist for research and development which are integral to Teaching Hospital status. There are two main hospital sites: Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley and South Ribble District General Hospital. The Hospital SPC inpatient service receives an average of 180 referrals per month across 2 hospital sites. The referrals are split between the Preston site (75% of referrals) and the Chorley site (25% of referrals). An increasing proportion of referrals are for patients with a non-cancer diagnosis both from the local population and across the tertiary services. The hospital specialist palliative care team provide a liaison service to adult inpatients.

Hospice care is provided through Inpatient, Outpatient, Lymphoedema and Community Specialist Nursing Services. The community services include a recently expanded CNS and consultant team, support assistants and a hospice at home pilot (due to commence Autumn 2022). The Hospice is led by a highly committed Board of Trustees who have overseen several refurbishment programmes to continuously improve facilities for patients, carers and families. Qualifications
Essential
- Full GMC Registration with license to practice
- MBBS or equivalent
- MRCP UK or equivalent
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Palliative Medicine via one of the following:
- a.Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (The proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview)
- b.Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
- c.European Community Rights
Desirable
- Higher Medical Degree (MA, MD, MSc, PhD)
Experience and Skills
Essential
- Experience and training in Specialist Palliative Care in hospital, hospice and community
- Proven ability in managing complex holistic palliative care in both malignant and non-malignant conditions
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients at Consultant level
- Awareness of current speciality specific clinical evidence, developments and guidelines
- Commitment to teaching medical and non-medical personnel
- Experience in supervising junior medical colleagues
- Evidence of continuing professional development
