Applications are invited for the post of consultant in Anaesthesia and Intestive Care Medicine from those who are on the specialty Register or within 6 months of eligibility for entry onto the register. Joint/Dual CCT for anaesthetics and ICM is essential.

The post is being advertised to replace an outgoing colleague and to support the ongoing development of our modern, state of the art, 16 bedded unit. The unit functions as a combined ITU and HDU for both medical and surgical specialties and currently operates to a maximum dependency of 10 level 3 patients, with the intention of increasing to 12 level 3 beds in the next year. The unit currently sees around 700 admissions per year, an interesting case-mix of medical and surgical patients, of which tertiary cardiology services for Northamptonshire and we regularly admit post PPCI patients following OOHCA or in severe cardiogenic shock requiring intra-aortic balloon pump and temporary pacing.

We also have an excellent 24/7 Critical care outreach cover provided by senior ICU trained nurses. The unit also hosts the haemodialysis service for the trust, using two of the beds located within the unit. The Unit also serves as the first response for paediatric emergencies although ventilated paediatric cases will always be transferred to the regional centre.

Main duties of the job

We are also undergoing an exciting transformation, under recent plans announced for Hospital Improvement, it is planned to move the ITU to a new build, and there is provision for a 20 bedded Unit within this design, promising excellent opportunity for growth and service development.

The Unit has been an active participant in the ICNARC Case Mix Programme and has achieved very consistent results with regard to key quality indicators for many years. The unit also received a Good rating in all 5 areas of the recent CQC inspection. We pride ourselves on our caring approach, which is consistently reflected in our friends and family test results. We also run an ICU follow up clinic for patients who required Level 3 Care.

The Unit is well provided with modern equipment, and we perform FUSIC and other point of care ultrasonography proactively. Our 2 FICE mentors are actively involved in teaching and training in critical care sonography both locally and regionally. We also have a purpose built state of the art simulation centre in the Post Graduate teaching department which we utilise for multidisciplinary simulation teaching.

The department has been actively involved in both portfolio and commercial studies including Calories, Promise, Obtain (highest recruiter in the UK) Leopards and Accupass, SILENCE ICU, and more recently, UK ROX, Recovery and ReMAP CAP trials.
