Job summary

We are looking to appoint a Lead Medical Examiner to champion and continuously improve the Medical Examiner process, so that no opportunity is lost for PAHT to learn from the deaths of patients in our care.

Main duties of the job

  • Overseeing the Medical Examiner process to ensure that PAHT never misses an opportunity to learn from the deaths of patients in their care
  • Establishing a high standard for and maintain the consistency of the work of the MEs
  • The recruitment and training of Medical Examiners (MEs)
  • Being the professional lead for MEs
  • To ensure all MEs comply with the legal and procedural requirements associated with the current and proposed reformed processes of certification, investigation by coroners and registration of deaths.
  • Being a source of advice for MEs and Bereavement Office staff on referrals to the Coroner (subject to guidance from the Senior Coroner) and completion of MCCDs

Job responsibilities

  • Ensuring there are adequate MEs available to fill the rota at all times
  • Providing MEs with an annual summary of activity for appraisal and revalidation purposes
  • Developing training programmes for all medical staff in relation to effectively interfacing with the ME service
  • To support the training of junior doctors in their understanding of death certification and promote good practice in accurate completion of MCCDs.
  • Working with clinicians and coders to capture accurate and complete data entry in to the medical records
  • Championing the use of an electronic data capture system to ensure that no opportunity is lost to learn from deaths. This includes ensuring that comprehensive records of all deaths scrutinised are maintained and using the systems analytic tools to provide information to the National Medical Examiners office.
