An exciting opportunity has arisen for the post of Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist within the Low Secure In-patient & Community Forensic Mental Health Team. This post will work alongside an existing Consultant colleague within the service, providing expert opinion, advice, assessment and treatment.

Knowledge and experience in secure and community forensic settings is essential. Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £86,063 per annum to £111,732 per annum plus a further £26,672 per annum available in Commitment Awards. Consultants in Wales paid on one of the first three points of the substantive Consultant pay scale also receive a Wales recruitment incentive payment.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership to the team to help support the recovery of people with complex mental health problems and forensic and risk issues, undertake clinical assessments, liaise with nursing/medical teams and plan appropriate care in relation to these patients. The post holder will lead both the in-patient and community teams and engage in regular Mental Health Act work including reporting both in writing and in person to MHA review tribunals, sometimes involving the Ministry of Justice.

The appointee will provide input to the public protection unit and will prepare court reports and appear in court regarding criminal justice proceedings. Liaison is required between medium secure settings and local setting. Additionally, the appointee will provide input to the MAPPA Unit, probation and gate-keeping for the Low Secure service.

Applicants must ensure they provide the names and contact details of referees covering at least the last three years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Qualifications

Essential

  • On GMC Specialist Register / Specialist Registrar with CCT/CESR(CP) due within 6 months of interview date
  • Eligible for Approved Clinician (Wales) status

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working and gate-keeping in high, medium and low secure psychiatric settings
  • Experience of working closely with MAPPA and criminal justice system in providing support to manage risk for individuals with mental disorders
  • Experience of developing care pathway for very complex forensic cases
  • Experience of conducting prison clinics

Skills

Essential

  • Experience in providing written reports for legal purposes

Knowledge

Essential

  • Expert knowledge of forensic psychiatry
  • Knowledge of HCR-20, PCL-R and other risk assessment tools
  • Risk management linked to provisions of mental health care including secure care and protection of public

Teaching

Essential

  • Evidence of teaching medical students, junior doctors and allied health professionals in clinical settings
