ENT are looking to recruit a fixed term 12-month Specialty Doctor based in the ENT department. This role is to cover a Deanery vacancy. Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a licence to practise.

The successful candidate will join a team of 6 Consultants and 2 Specialist Trainees, 1 GP Trainee and 1 Foundation Year Doctor. The junior staff are all on rotation from Health Education England - North West.

The appointee will be responsible to the Clinical Lead for ENT and accountable to the Associate Medical Director for Surgery and Cancer.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be based at Leighton Hospital, Crewe in the ENT Department, Surgery and Cancer Division. Outpatient activity will also be provided at Victoria Infirmary Northwich.

The post is offered initially at 10 PAs, to be worked flexibly, incorporating clinics and theatre sessions.

The post comprises 9 Direct Clinical Care including 1 PA on-call, and 1 SPA for audit, teaching and research.

The post holder will participate in the middle grade on-call rota (1 in 8) which provides cross cover with the University Hospital of North Midlands, covering the Royal Stoke Hospital and Stafford. The current arrangements are that at the weekend, all acute admissions are admitted to the Royal Stoke Hospital. The post holder will be expected to live within reasonable distance from the hospital to allow easy access to both on call sites.

A formal job plan review will be undertaken between the appointee and the Clinical Lead, three months after the commencement date of the appointment. This job plan will be agreed by the Associate Medical Director.

The job plan will be reviewed at least annually by the Clinical Lead. The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out the Specialty Doctor's duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year.

The post holder will liaise with medical colleagues, nursing staff and other professionals.

The post holder will be expected to cover colleagues during periods of leave/sickness

Job responsibilities

The ENT Department provides acute services for Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with a catchment population of around 290,000.

The ENT department establishment consists of 5 Consultants, 1 Specialty Doctor (this post), 2 Specialist Trainees (on rotation from Health Education England North West), 1 GP Trainee and 1 Foundation Year Doctor. All training posts are recognised for training by the Royal College of Surgeons.

A general Otolaryngology interest is maintained by all consultants, with sub specialist interests as follows:

Mr Apostolos Karkanevatos Facial Plastics, Voice, Otology

Mr Ahmed Sweed Head & Neck Oncology, Salivary and Thyroid Surgery

Vacant Rhinology and Facial Plastics

Mr Bernhard Attlmayr Otology and Facial Plastics

Leighton Hospital is a modern District General Hospital and an Associate Teaching Hospital of the University of Manchester. The Surgery and Cancer Division provides acute services for Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The ENT service shares a ward with the other specialist surgical specialties of Urology and Ophthalmology. The ward has an ENT treatment room with microscope and flexible endoscopy. The child and adolescent unit provides in-patient beds for all paediatric emergencies, a treatment room and 10-day case surgical beds available for all specialties.

An 8 theatre and critical care building opened in April 2014. This modern theatre facility provides a state-of-the-art environment, including two fully integrated theatres, separate paediatric and adult recovery bays. This is complemented by a dedicated surgical admissions lounge and a refurbished Treatment Centre which provides a day case facility for all adult endoscopy and day case activity.

A purpose-built ENT out-patient unit comprises 6 large consulting rooms with wall-mounted microscopes. There is also a treatment room with a microscope, a pre-operative assessment room and a speech therapy room.

There is an active Audiology Department within the unit which provides support to the ENT Department as well as delivering its own services. These include a direct referral hearing aid service, direct referral for unilateral hearing loss and tinnitus, paediatric testing including ABR and support to the neonatal hearing screening programme.

Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is aligned to the Mersey and Cheshire Strategic Clinical Network. Cancer services are provided in conjunction with Aintree University Hospital for Surgery and Christie Hospital for Oncology services. One stop neck lump clinics are supported by radiology.

The department has 1 Expert Advanced Practitioner, 1 Advanced Nurse Practitioner in ENT Emergency Care, 1 ENT Nurse Practitioner and a Macmillan Head and Neck Cancer Nurse Specialist.

Full radiology services are available including CT and MRI scanning.

The post holder will be provided with secretarial support, and access to a computer with appropriate IT support and Internet access.

Person Specification


  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
  • MRCS or DOHNS or equivalent


  • Other post graduate qualification


  • Qualified for 3 years with minimum 2 years ENT experience


  • On-call experience in ENT at middle grade or equivalent
