The Trauma and Orthopaedic service to the Coventry district is based at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire situated near Walsgrave on the edge of Coventry centre. It serves a population of 900,000 including the area around the Hospital of St Cross, Rugby.

UHCW is one of the 3 Major Trauma Centres in the West Midlands. It is also a tertiary referral centre for Orthopaedic Trauma.

At the two hospitals no specific number of beds is allocated to any one Consultant, the beds being shared as necessity demands. There is an Intensive Care/High Dependency Unit with 30 beds at UHCW and a 5-bedded Elective care Unit at Rugby St Cross. There are 79 orthopaedic beds at UH and 41 at Rugby St Cross. The Children's unit has 3 wards, an HDU and a neonatal ICU comprising 68 beds in total.

There is a very active teaching programme. In addition, the department runs daily general trauma meetings and lunchtime meetings.

Main duties of the job

Regular Orthopaedic outpatient clinics at UH Coventry and Rugby St Cross Hospitals.

Operating sessions at both hospitals but the majority of elective orthopaedics is delivered at St Cross hospital.

Supervising the treatment of patients in UH Coventry and at Rugby St Cross Hospital.

Carrying our regular ward rounds as appropriate.

Participation in clinical audit and research activities within the unit.

Active involvement in the training and supervision of Junior Medical Staff on ward rounds, in theatre and in clinics, including the teaching of medical and nursing students.
