CONSULTANT CLINICAL ONCOLOGIST INTEREST IN BREAST CANCER – SABR

JOB OVERVIEW

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) and Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT) are pleased to be in the position to offer a 10.25PA substantive Consultant Clinical Oncology post specialising in the treatment of Breast Cancer and stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) for bone metastases. Candidates wishing to work less than full time will be welcome to apply. 

The Clinical Oncology service based in Southampton provides a local and regional service; treating patients from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, further afield across Wessex, and also the Channel Islands. There is a collaborative approach with neighbouring Cancer Centres in Poole and Portsmouth, and active engagement in the Thames Valley and Wessex Operational Delivery Network (ODN). 

There are 21 Consultant Clinical Oncologists, 4 SAS grade doctors, in addition there are 8 whole time equivalent Specialist Registrars who take part in the Wessex clinical oncology training programme.

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION AND MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

What you’ll do

This new post will involve responsibility for the care of patients with Breast cancer within both UHS and HHFT and deliver SABR bone treatment for patients within region.

The expectation is the post will involve 2 days per week in Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital (BNHH), and three days in Southampton (UHS).

The Breast component will involve joining a group of 5 clinical oncologists at UHS and alongside Dr Raj, provide clinical oncology expertise to the Breast cancer MDT for Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT).

The HHFT MDT covers patients from Royal Hampshire County Hospital (RHCH) Winchester, under Dr Raj, and Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital (BNHH)

Provision of non-surgical oncology for Breast cancer patients at BNHH will be shared with Dr Remer, Medical Oncologist.

An important component of the post will be the continued development and delivery of the SABR bone service through the UHS Oligometastatic SABR MDT, Led by Dr Wood.

The radiotherapy department has undergone major development and investment over the last few years. This has included replacement of all 6 Southampton Elekta linacs and incorporating and matching the Elekta Linac on the BNHH site as a satellite unit. 2 Southampton linacs have Exac Trac® and Hexa POD® couch for SRS and Head and neck cancer treatments. A superficial/orthovoltage facility is also available in Southampton for skin treatment.

UHS has strong links with the University of Southampton and there will be opportunities to become involved in collaborative research, clinical trials and medical student teaching.

There will also be a contribution to the acute oncology service in BNHH. The post holder will participate in the Southampton Clinical Oncology on call rota. This provides evening / night-time telephone advice during the week and ward rounds on Saturday and Sunday with a frequency of approximately 1:18

What we’re looking for

Applicants should have CCT in clinical oncology and be on the GMC Specialist Register. Consideration will also be given to applicants with consultant level experience working towards GMC specialist registration.

Where equivalent qualifications or experience are being offered, it is essential that candidates should provide confirmation of this from the relevant College or Faculty in the United Kingdom and attach the confirmation to your application.
