The successful applicant will be based at Burbage Ward at the Michael Carlisle Centre in the Netheredge region of Sheffield. Burbage Ward is a female only ward with 16 beds. There are approximately 170 admissions per annum to the ward with approximately three quarters being detained under the Mental Health Act. In a one year period there were 74 tribunals/managers hearings regarding Burbage patients. The principle duty of this post is to provide a comprehensive clinical service Burbage Ward supported by a supervising Consultant and the wider team comprising of trainee doctors and a Physician Associate as well as nursing and support staff.

Main duties of the job

Although the post of Clinical Fellow in Psychiatry is not a recognised training post, the Trust is committed to supporting your development in a vibrant teaching environment. This post will be attractive for doctors who have completed their Foundation training and are looking for experience in psychiatry or doctors who have completed their Core training in psychiatry and are looking to commit to higher training in psychiatry.

In addition to clinical commitments, the post holder will be required to deputise for absent colleagues from time to time and to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. The post holder will also be required to be available exceptionally for such irregular commitments outside normal rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.

Job responsibilities

  • To undertake duties as defined within the job description in so far as practicable and in agreement with your clinical director.
  • To participate in the out of hours rota on a regular or ad hoc basis according to service need.
  • To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of any Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.
  • On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trusts Corporate Induction.
  • To participate in the Trusts statutory and mandatory training programme
  • To be responsible for the clinical management of in and out patients under your care.
  • To comply with Trust policies and procedures where appropriate.
  • Completion of administrative tasks related to clinical responsibilities
  • To, at all times, comply with the GMC requirements of Duties of a Doctor.
  • To ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.

Medical Degree


  • Bachelor of Medicine

Professional Registration

  • GMC Registration Number


  • 24 Months continuous experience within the NHS (F1 & F2 years)
  • Able to prioritise clinical need, time and workload


  • Experience in Psychiatry
  • Knowledge of UK health systems, practices and values; awareness of current issues in the NHS
