Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Chemical Pathologist at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust - Wexham Park Site. This post is a full time post.
The successful candidate will be based primarily at the Wexham Park Site and will join the current Chemical Pathologist and Clinical scientists in offering support to the general biochemistry services. In addition the successful candidate will be expected to provide clinical services to the Trust including managing lipid disorders in an outpatient setting.
The Blood Sciences department is one of two hub laboratories within Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services a large pathology network of NHS laboratories serving Ashford & St Peter's, Frimley Park, Royal Berkshire, Royal Surrey, Wexham Park and Surrey and Sussex Hospitals. The Wexham Park Site provides Blood Sciences services to the acute Wexham Park Hospital and to the GPs across Berkshire and prenatal screening services to the local Trust.
Main duties of the job
The wider biochemistry department is strong clinically and analytically with an enthusiastic and supportive team of able chemical pathologists, clinical scientists and biomedical scientists providing a broad range of services including specialist analytical, interpretive and EQA services. Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services is recognised as a national leader in POCT services. Clinical services run by the department include bariatric, renal stone and lipid OPD clinics and a clinical investigation unit. The Department is a Supra-regional Assay Service Laboratory for Trace Elements and Peptide Hormones. It provides External Quality Assessment Schemes for trace elements, peptide hormones and Point of Care Testing. It also supports the South of England Hub for the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme and has a cardiovascular biomarkers lab. The Department works closely with the University of Surrey, which brings together a variety of analytical and clinical groups within the University and NHS.
Participation in on-call rotas and duty biochemist sessions is required.
FHFT provides acute health services to a large & diverse population of over 900,000 across East Berkshire and North Surrey & parts of South Bucks. The Trust operates on two main acute sites: Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey & Wexham Park Hospital in Slough, Berkshire. The Trust additionally provides non-acute services at Heatherwood hospital in Ascot, St Marks hospital in Maidenhead, and King Edward VII hospital in Windsor & outpatient facilities at Aldershot, Bracknell, Gerrard Cross, Fleet, and Farnham. The Trust hospitals have in, excess of 900 beds.
This post is based at the hub facilities at Wexham Park hospital, with responsibility for East Berkshire. This has a catchment population in, excess of 452,000 (2018 CCG data); this includes both affluent areas such as Ascot, Windsor, and Maidenhead, and the larger urban areas of Bracknell and Slough, which has areas of significant social deprivation. Primary care is provided by the East Berkshire CCG, which is responsible for 52 GP surgeries, some of which have up to 20 GPs.
The Trust has an excellent record of service delivery of quality clinical care and achievement of financial balance. Wexham Park hospital was rated Good by the Care Quality Commission in September 2018, achieving Excellent rating for Urgent/Emergency services, Intensive Care, and Leadership. This success has been achieved by excellent relationships between clinical medical staff and colleagues throughout the organisation.

- Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) in Chemical Pathology or Chemical Pathology (Metabolic Medicine) with the GMC
- Applicants who are UK trained must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview
- Applicants who are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
- FRCPath or equivalent
- MRCP, MD, PhD, or other higher degree
- Interest in Newborn Screening
