Job Overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic Consultant Microbiologist to work in our Microbiology team. The post is based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and will also cover the Princess Royal Hospital, the Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital as well as community and primary care services in Shropshire. Full time and part time applications are welcome

Main duties of the job

The Department provides clinical microbiology services for around 500,000 people and includes bacteriology, mycology, serology and molecular sections. The post holder will participate in providing a comprehensive clinical, laboratory, diagnostic and consultative microbiology and infection control service to the Trust and other users of the service.

Applicants are required to hold FRCPath or equivalent, be on the GMC Specialist Register (CCT in Microbiology or Microbiology and Infectious Diseases) or within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview. The post attracts 10 PAs and there is a 1 in 4 on-call commitment. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wish to job-share.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointee, together with the other colleagues will be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, efficient, and cost-effective clinical microbiology, virology and infection control service to the Trust and other users of the service.

Clinical liaison

The post holder will be expected to liaise in a timely manner with clinicians, hospital staff, medical microbiologists, general practitioners and health protection consultants concerning the diagnosis and management of patients, control and prevention of infections including the provision of telephone advice.

Responsibilities for regular visits to the ITUs and ward rounds at the 3 main hospitals are shared between the consultants. Similarly attendance and presentations at clinical and audit meetings and advice on specific areas of interest are shared. The appointee will be expected to take an appropriate share of these commitments by mutual agreement.
