Laparoscopic Fellow in Surgery

Applications are invited for the post of laparoscopic fellow in Colorectal or Emergency Surgery at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to discuss extending the contract beyond the initial twelve month appointment should this be desired.

You will join a busy surgical unit in a large acute hospital Trust of around 1,000 beds, serving a resident population of approximately 550,000 and providing a wide range of elective / emergency surgical procedures. The successful candidate will join our team of trainees and have the opportunity to undertake training in line with their professional and developmental needs. There is the opportunity to participate in teaching, audit and research to enhance your portfolio.

Main duties of the job

The department of gastrointestinal surgery is one of the busiest nationwide with 16 laparoscopic GI surgeons (five Upper GI; eight Colorectal, three Emergency General). The department offers a full range of laparoscopic general and colorectal surgery including eLAPE, Transanal (TEO / TEMS / TATME) as well as benign Upper GI surgery including a large bariatric practice. This post would suit either senior trainees or CCT holders wishing to consolidate their laparoscopic experience. Previous laparoscopic fellows in particular have used the opportunity to develop experience in deep pelvic laparoscopic dissection techniques.

Principal responsibilities include inpatient/day case operating and perioperative ward care and participation in a 1 in 12 rota general surgical On Call. The Trust offers three state-of-the-art dedicated fully integrated laparoscopic theatres (two at RCH; one at WCH). The post will be based at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro, although you will be required to work at the other RCHT sites including West Cornwall Hospital, Penzance. There is an opportunity for endoscopic sessions for those with JAG accreditation

This post will provide day time ward cover and take part in the night on call rota.

You will need to be fully registered with the General Medical Council at the time of appointment. Applications are encouraged from those unable to work full-time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.

  • GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Successful completion of MRCS or equivalent

  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation Competences from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent
  • Evidence of achievement of senior ST competences in general surgery supported by evidence from work-based assessments of clinical performance (DOPS, Mini-CEX, CBD, ACAT) and Multi-source feedback or equivalent.
