Clinical Fellow ST3+ IN HEPATOLOGY

This is a fantastic opportunity to join one of the largest academic and clinical Liver Units in the UK as a clinical fellow (or fixed term contract (FTC)). The post holder will join the existing team of specialist trainee's and will provide clinical services to liver in-patients and support out-patient liver services. In addition to ward work, candidates have OP clinics, MDT's and educational meetings. They will be responsible for running a paracentesis clinic and hot liver clinic under the supervision of the consultant. Interested candidates may choose to participate in additional training activities including clinical research and endoscopy. As a large University trust post holders will be expected to take part in clinical training of medical students attached to the firm. There is no on call commitment as part of this job.

Main duties of the job

  • Liver cancer (lead Dr Paul Kooner) with the regional HPB surgical unit on site and ready access to diagnostic and therapeutic interventions
  • Liver transplantation (lead Dr Yiannis Kallis) with local patient assessment and post-operative care (liver transplantation is performed at The Royal Free Hospital where surgery is performed)
  • Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver disease (lead by Dr.William Alazawi) with clinical and academic studies in pathogenesis and new therapeutics in this disease
  • Portal hypertension and advanced cirrhosis (lead Dr Vikram Sharma) with studies of new diagnostic and management approaches.
  • Alcohol induced liver disease (lead Dr Janet Dearden) with close links to regional support services.
  • Education and palliative care in liver disease (lead Dr Sushma Saksena) and clinics at Newham General Hospital


Joint Liver-Renal Clinic (Lead by Dr.Richard Marley) every month to assess patients with end stage renal disease and concomitant liver disease

Job description
Job responsibilities

This role is based at The Liver Unit at The Royal London Hospital, which has close links to the internationally recognised Digestive Disorders Clinical Group. The unit works closely with the gastroenterology team at Whipps Cross Hospital and Newham Hospital and provides out-patient viral hepatitis services to these hospitals. An integrated multi-disciplinary service is run within the department and in conjunction with other clinical groups, most importantly surgery, pathology and radiology. There are also close links with the clinical department of paediatric gastroenterology allowing opportunities for extra experience and training (e.g. in adolescent medicine). The Liver Unit is an international centre of excellence for the management of patients with complex viral hepatitis and leads the regional clinical service for patients with hepatitis C. Over 5000 out-patients are seen annually and the unit admits ~500 patients annually.

The Department offers a wide range of training opportunities with special interests in:

  • Chronic hepatitis C (lead Professor Graham Foster) with an extensive clinical trial and basic science research programme
  • Chronic hepatitis B (lead Dr Patrick Kennedy) with a large translational research program
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (lead Dr William Alazawi) with close links to metabolic medicine and innovative approaches to diagnosis and management
