Fixed term appointment Specialist Registrar

General Medicine and Geriatric Medicine

August 2022 - August 2023

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join our dynamic team providing acute GIM and Geriatric Medicine services to the people of Newham. This would suit either a full time or part time candidate and will be available from August 2022 - August 2023.

Newham University Hospital is a district general hospital with a major undergraduate teaching role, serving one of the most ethnically diverse populations in the UK.

The Care of the Elderly Department has an age related policy for medical admissions, with ongoing care of medical emergencies in patients aged 75 years and above. This is in association with a General Medical (all ages) integrated on call rota. The Geriatric consultants also provide the majority input into the Medical Admissions Team, as well as providing Stroke, Frailty and community services.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will contribute to the acute GIM service at Newham University Hospital (NUH), with full commitment to the integrated general medical on call rota (Registrar level). They will have continued management of older medical inpatients, either on the acute short stay unit or on the complex care/rehabilitation ward. They will also contribute to outpatient services in Care of the Elderly. There is also the opportunity to participate in specialist clinics, such as Diagnostic Memory Clinic and TIA clinic, and participate in Nursing Home visits. They will also provide input into the Acute Frailty service.

He/she will join a team of seven consultants specialising in Geriatric Medicine, GIM and Stroke Medicine based at NUH, supported by three specialist registrars, 10 ST1/2, 2 F2s and 7 F1s. The team also comprises of a full multidisciplinary team, including nurses, therapists, social workers, pharmacists. Secretarial/patient pathway coordinator support is based at NUH.

They will have continued management of older medical inpatients, either on the acute short stay unit or on the complex care/rehabilitation ward. They will contribute to outpatient services in Care of the Elderly. There is also the opportunity to participate in specialist clinics, such as Diagnostic Memory Clinic and TIA clinic, and to join Nursing Home visits. They will also contribute to the Acute Frailty service.

The successful applicant will be encouraged to take part in audit, governance and teaching.

The post is ideal for candidates wishing to pursue a career in Geriatric Medicine. There are ample career development opportunities within the department to help candidates apply for training number in geriatric and general (internal) medicine.

Knowledge

  • Good basic general Medical Knowledge
  • Experience of working in NHS
  • Skilled at practical procedures eg Central venous lines

Desirable

 

  • Experience at SpR level Previous Geriatric Medicine experience
