Core Trainee in Anaesthetics

Newham University Hospital

This is a core anaesthetic training post based at Newham University Hospital which has resulted from vacancy in the national anaesthetic training programme.

Main duties of the job

This post is offered a fantastic opportunity for doctors who have completed their IAC and 6 months of anaesthetics are looking to gain further experience to apply for a national training number. The post is modelled on the Stage One anaesthetic training and take you through the general and specific domains of the 2021 RCoA curriculum.

You will be working with the other trainees to gain you anaesthetic competencies and you will have an educational supervisor who will support your development and who will be responsible for your educational progress and eportfolio sign off.

You will be exposed to a varied clinical caseload, and where services are not available on the Newham site sessions will be arranged on other BartsHealth sites to provide this experience. There may be opportunity to extend your contract to work in Critical Care and to gain your Stage 1 ICM competencies.

This post is a 6 month fixed term placement at Newham University Hospital from August 2022. Career development will be actively supported with the opportunity to develop skills in management, education and governance.

There may be scope to extend this to cover the whole of the stage one training.

The department is accredited for training by the GMC and study leave is supported by the Trust to allow facilitate attendance on courses and at conferences.

Job responsibilities

  1. Participate in the provision of anaesthetics at NUH.
  2. Participate in the anaesthetic rota
  3. Assist in the provision of safe, effective and efficient anaesthetic services.
  4. To ensure that standards are maintained and developed through clinical audit, evidence based research and appraisal.
  5. Participate fully in clinical governance, including reporting of incidents, investigation of serious incidents and any complaints.

Qualifications and training
Essential
  • GMC Registration
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Completion of Foundation Training programme or equivalent 2 year training period
  • Minimum 6 months anaesthetics experience and completion of IAC
  • ALS

  • ATLS/APLS/EPLS
Research and Development

  • Publication in a journal
  • Good Clinical Practice training
Clinical Skills
Essential
  • Good history and examination skills

  • FICE/Level 1 ultrasound sign-off
  • Advanced airway skills and the ability to manage the difficult airway

  • Instructor on Life Support course(s)- ALS/ATLS/APLS
