Specialty Doctor -  Lewisham Psychiatric Liaison Team - 6PAs - Fixed Term 9 Months

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) are looking to recruit a part-time, dynamic and enthusiastic Specialty Doctor to work with the Lewisham Psychiatric Liaison Team.

Main duties of the job

The doctor will offer input in the Emergency Department (ED) and on the inpatient wards in University Hospital Lewisham (UHL) as necessary to support the Liaison MDT.  In future the role will also cover the proposed new Crisis Assessment Unit (CAU); it is hoped that this will open later in 2022.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a part-time role with the planned hours being three weekdays 9am to 5pm.  It is hoped these will be Monday, Tuesday and Friday but there is some flexibility here.  The post is being offered as a 6-9 month fixed term post in the first instance. We are willing to consider applicants who wish to work for a shorter time, the minimum being six months.  We are open to a job share if there are two good candidates who would like to split the role. 

The Specialty Doctor will be supervised by the Liaison Consultants and will work with the Liaison MDT.

The Specialty Doctor will lead assessments in ED and on the wards, including Mental Health Act (MHA) assessments.  The doctor will be available to discuss cases with the Psychiatric Liaison Nurses (PLNs) and the wider Liaison MDT to help generate safe and effective management plans.  The doctor will help supervise the Core Trainee (CT) and Foundation Year 1 (FY1) doctor. 

UHL is a 450-bedded teaching hospital situated in an inner London Borough, Lewisham.  Lewisham has an estimated population of about 305,000 with a diverse ethnic community, approx. 47% BME population.

The proposed CAU is a new service offering an alternative environment to A&E, which is calmer and more containing for staff and patients.  We expect there to be capacity for four patients at any one time in the space.  The specialty doctor will support the Psychiatric Liaison Nurses (PLNs) and Peer Support Workers (PSWs) who will be based in the CAU. The doctor will be part of MDT discussions and will offer senior medical cover to promote safety in and flow through the CAU.
