Job Details

We are looking for two dynamic individuals to join our team within the Emergency Department at the Leeds General Infirmary and St James's University Hospital. The creation of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust represents a unique opportunity for the city to become home to one of the leading health care institutions in the world, excelling in patient care, teaching and research.

This is for two 10 PA locum appointments for Consultants in Emergency Medicine for a period of 6 months in the first instance. Part time working will be considered. The post will be available immediately.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has undertaken a major investment in its Emergency Medicine services to provide specialist Consultant led trauma care at the Leeds General Infirmary which has been designated a Major Trauma Centre, and a 24/7 Consultant presence in the Emergency Department.

The Emergency Departments in Leeds have an excellent reputation for quality, innovation and education. The Emergency Medicine service treats in excess of 220,000 new patients per year. Acute services in Leeds have undergone extensive reconfiguration to deliver trauma based services and paediatrics on the LGI site and acute and elderly medicine at St James's. The Emergency Departments have undergone modifications to reflect these patient flows, including expansion of the Paediatric ED on the LGI site. All Consultants work across all areas of the Emergency Departments on both sites.

The two departments have an excellent reputation for training. We provide subspecialty training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine for trainees from both Emergency Medicine and Paediatrics.

Each post is part of a Consultant team which delivers a 24hr Consultant presence in the Emergency Departments. It is expected that newly appointed Consultants will share this commitment with all members of the current team. We recognise the importance of ensuring that work patterns of our Consultants are sustainable.

The successful applicants should possess FRCEM (or FRCPCH or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

The Trust is committed to providing sustainable consultant-delivered services to ensure the quality of the patient experience. Working patterns that provide senior cover throughout 24 hours per day, seven days per week will therefore be required. Successful candidates will be expected to work with the Trust and their consultant colleagues to deliver service patterns and job plans that meet this objective.

Applicants should have established skills in Emergency Medicine and may have a subspecialty interest. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.

Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact one of the following:

Dr Sarah Davey Clinical Director. Tel:  0113 20 66550

Gareth Dalby General Manager. Tel: 0113 20 66550

BMJ Ref: BMJ-82448/298-MED-3231
