The Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant Gastroenterologist to continue the development of the gastroenterology and endoscopy services at the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust.

This is a new post resulting from the expansion of the Gastroenterology Service. The development in Gastroenterology will support the emergency gastrointestinal bleed rota and will allow urgent review of patients with gastroenterological or liver diseases including general medicine, gastroenterology and endoscopy.

An interest in ERCP is essential and further interest in advanced endoscopy would be welcome.

Main duties of the job

The main purpose of the post is to further develop and support services for patients with gastroenterological disease with a special focus on enhancing the ERCP and interventional endoscopy service. The successful candidate will be responsible, in conjunction with Dr Sankara Raman, Dr Edmond Sung, Dr Matilda Beckley, Dr Noor Hossain, Dr Shakil Kathawala and Dr Gordon Wood for running a comprehensive district general hospital gastroenterology service. This includes a direct access endoscopy service, a fast-track two week referral service for the patients with possible gastrointestinal cancer and support for the colorectal multi-disciplinary team meeting in addition to ERCP.The successful candidate will be expected to perform a minimum of 3 endoscopy lists a week including 2 weekly ERCP lists and 1-2 further luminal endoscopy lists.Endoscopy lists consist of 10 points on a list(OGD /FOS 1 point, colonoscopy 2 points), this is reduced to 8 points if this is a training list. The session would last for 4 hours. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in weekly colorectal cancer, upper gastrointestinal, hepato- pancreatobiliary cancer MDTs and monthly inflammatory bowel disease MDTs. There is potential to develop further services with advanced therapeutic endoscopy such as complex polypectomy, ESD, EMR or EUS.

Job responsibilities

Take on-going responsibility for patients under his/her care.

Provide a consultation service and advisory service to other clinicalcolleagues in other specialties within the Trust and Primary Care.

Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other post graduate activities.

Develop and maintain good communications with General practitioners andappropriate external agencies.

Participate in the development of the care of patients arriving as emergencies.

Participate and encourage two way communications encompassing briefingsystems as appropriate.

Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.

Ensure that all trust wide standards are maintained to improve the quality of total care to all who come in contact with services provided by GEH.

Ensure compliance with all appropriate legal and statutory requirements,including Health and Safety, Standing financial Instructions and IncidentReporting.

Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of computers.

Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Managementand Clinical Audit this will include the development and maintenance ofappropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice.

Take responsibility for the professional supervision and development oftrainee doctors and other staff within the specialty. This will include theappraisal of doctors in training, and the Certificates of Satisfaction in respect of foundation year doctors.

Ensure own practice is up-to-date which will include taking responsibility for own Continuous Professional Development and participating in the Trusts Performance and Annual Review system.

Participate in the continuing professional development scheme of anappropriate medical college and the Trust & University Joint Appraisalscheme. The Trust supports the requirements for Continuing MedicalEducation as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committedto providing time and financial support for these activities.
