This is an exciting opportunity for a substantive Consultant to join the team with a remit to work within the multi-disciplinary team to provide and further develop care for women within the Women's Health service. The successful applicant will be expected to provide a 7-day elective gynaecological and urogynaecological care including surgery at all affiliated sites. This post is a full time 10PA post.

There are regular On-Call commitment 1:12 with this post cross site, and, there might be regular rostrered weekend working as per departmental needs.

Main duties of the job

The post will be based at King's College Hospital NHSFT and affiliated sites. There will be an average of 8.5 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with the remainder being allocated for Supporting Professional and/or other Activities. The post-holder is expected to undertake work across sites and in elective weekend working. It is anticipated that as the post-holder develops areas of research and audit interest or takes on leadership roles for areas within the service that this supporting activity will be increased subject to job-planning.

Job responsibilities

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Together with the other Consultants to provide Maternity and Gynaecology services for women attending Kings College Hospital. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties required for the proper functioning of the department.
  2. Shared responsibility with the other Consultants for providing 24 hour, 7 day a week cover for the Obstetrics and Gynaecology on an on-call rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness/absence.
  3. Shared responsibility with other Consultants for providing a 7-day elective service across sites.
  4. See patients in new patient and follow up clinics to counsel them and plan their management
  5. Adhere to national guidelines and use of British Society of Urogynaecology (BSUG) database
  6. Partake in weekly urogynaecology MDT and approximately monthly multidisciplinary pelvic surgeons MDT.
  7. Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
  8. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
  9. To contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.
  10. To contribute to the Audit Programme.
  11. To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Groups Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
  12. To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for Womens services.
  13. To exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
  14. To work in conjunction with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for junior colleagues.
  15. To undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Clinical Director.
  16. To be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. To undertake annual training/updates in infection prevention and control.
  17. To be accountable for implementation of the Code of Practice within own department/area of responsibility.
  18. To prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence based practice and maintaining patient safety.
  19. You have a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of yourself, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.
  20. You are required to observe the rules, policies, procedures and standards of Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.
  21. You are required to observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.
  22. You are required to be responsible, with management support, for your own personal development and to actively contribute to the development of colleagues.
  23. All employees must hold an 'nhs.net' email account which will be the Trust's formal route for email communication. You are therefore required to check this regularly and to deal with such communication promptly.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • Registerable medical qualification
  • MRCOG or equivalent

Desirable

  • Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD)

Registration
Essential

  • Full registration with GMC
  • Within six months of the expected date of CCT (or equivalent) on the day of interview

Training and Experience
Essential

  • Wide experience in all aspects of Obstetrics &Gynaecology, culminating in award of CCT or equivalent.
  • RCOG accredited Subspecialist in Urogynaecology, including laparoscopic urogynaecology module (subspecialty training)
  • Advanced Labour Ward Practice ATSM

Administration
Essential

  • Experience in day to day organisation of services in a busy Teaching Hospital

Desirable

  • Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes

Management and Leadership
Essential

  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams.

Desirable

  • Management course and/or qualification

Audit & quality improvement
Essential

  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit and quality improvement. Must be able to demonstrate ability to lead change

Research
Essential

  • Experience of conducting or supporting clinical research.

Desirable

  • Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Gynaecology
  • Publication of relevant review articles or case reports.

Teaching
Essential

  • Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparation.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary teaching

Desirable

  • Teaching skills course/qualification PROMPT trainer course
