Fixed Term Service Appointment Specialty Registrar (Higher Level) - Haematology

A vacancy has arisen for a Fixed Term Service Appointment Specialty Registrar (Higher level) at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board in the Haematology directorate, based at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. This post is available from 3.8.2022 until 1.8.2023.

The haematology department consists of 26 inpatient beds, 10 Blood and Marrow Transplantation beds, day and ambulatory care units, a dedicated Haemostasis and Thrombosis service and full array laboratory haematology services.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain clinical experience all aspects of haematology including outpatient, liaison, inpatient and emergency care. The candidate will be part of a non-resident on call rota and all clinical care will be supervised and supported by haematology consultants. The successful candidate will be encouraged to be involved in QI projects and teaching.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP(UK) Part 1 at time of application
Desirable
  • oCompletion of the relevant membership examination by time of application
  • oIntercalated BSc or equivalent
  • oHigher degrees including MSc, PhD or MD (where the research thesis is not part of first medical degree)
Clinical Experience/Skills
Essential
  • Evidence of experience in a range of acute medical specialties, with experience of managing patients on unselected medical take during core training or equivalent or, for non-physician applicants, corresponding experience from core/early years training in the relevant specialty
  • oAwareness of the basics of managing haematological disease
  • oAppropriate knowledge base and ability to apply clinical judgement to problems
Desirable
  • Experience at core level of managing patients with haematological disease and managing haematological emergencies
  • oEvidence of skills in the management of acute medical emergencies
  • oEvidence of some capabilities in the specialty
Research & Teaching
Essential
  • oEvidence of involvement in a quality improvement project, formal research project
  • oDemonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues
  • oEvidence of teaching experience and/or training in teaching
