Job Details

This post has been designed to provide research training with the aim of progressing to the award of MS/MD. The surgical research fellow will be exposed to a wide variety of advanced surgical procedures, in a busy tertiary hospital and offers opportunities to develop important research questions.

During the year the main focus of the Surgical Research Fellow will be to conduct clinical duties, participate in the collection of clinical research data and undertake laboratory based work. Publication of research material and presentation at national and international conferences is expected.

Main duties of the job

The surgical research fellow post combines clinical research and some clinical commitment in the form of on calls on the Registrar rota. The post holder will spend the majority of time in clinical and laboratory research supervised in the department of colorectal surgery. The post is for a period of 12 months initially and it will be possible to extend for a further year depending on satisfactory progress and mutual agreement. It is expected that the post holder will register with the University for a Formal Degree MS/MD/PhD.

Some of the duties include participating in,

  • the research projects of Colorectal Department
  • the on call commitment in ASU
  • the Diverticular Disease Clinic
  • other clinical aspects of Colorectal Department (discussed with SCF in Rota- DSU, main theatres, Ward Rounds, MDM )

Job responsibilities

The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and wellbeing and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.

  • The post holder has an important responsibility for and contribution to infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role.

Person Specification
Essential

  • Registrable medical qualification
  • Full registration with GMC
  • Equivalent to Registrar Grade in General Surgery
  • Understanding of principles of medical audit
  • Clear desire to undertake research projects
  • Desire to continue personal development
  • Effective communicator, able to work in a close-knit team and co-operate with all medical and paramedical staff
  • Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills
  • Professional attitude towards work; reliability

Desirable

  • FRCS (Gen)
  • Higher Degree
  • Specialist Colorectal Surgical experience
  • Undertaken Audit projects
  • Previous involvement in research projects
  • Experience of under-graduate teaching
