Gloucestershire Orthopaedics has a well-established program of rotating Trust Registrars/LAS Doctors through the range of Orthopaedic sub-specialties. The aim is to broaden the candidates experience and deepening their knowledge with the eventual aim of successful completion of the FRCS(Tr&Orth). We have had several successful CESR applications from our Trust registrars in the last decade.

We aim to recruit a high-quality individual who either wishes to optimize his experience for a future application for a NTN (national training number) or wishes to progress via the CESR system in Orthopaedic Surgery.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be expected to work with the rest of the orthopaedic team to provide orthopaedic and trauma services to the county. The post will be predominantly based in the main two hospitals with work at other community hospital sites in the county.

The appointee will be expected to work eight clinical sessions per week, which is the same as the Specialist Registrars. Most of these sessions will be fixed but there will be an annualised component to cover other clinics and lists. The appointee take part in the middle grade on call rota at Gloucester Royal Hospital, which is prospectively covered.

EDUCATION

There are plenty of opportunities to prepare for the FRCS (Tr and Orth) examination. The successful candidate will undergo an annual appraisal with Mr Gleeson, Orthopaedic Specialty Tutor. If mutually agreeable contract extensions can be arranged.

TEACHING

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust accommodates medical, nursing and Allied Health Professions students. It is anticipated that the appointee will take part in teaching these groups as appropriate. Medical students attend from the Gloucestershire Clinical Academy as part of the University of Bristol.

Protected time of one session is included in the program for general, administration and dictating and signing letters. This may allow attendance at regional teaching sessions in Bristol subject to the timetable.

RESEARCH

There is an active research programme and research opportunities could be made available to the interested post holder. Mr Bigsby is our research co-ordinator

CLINICAL GOVERNANCE AND AUDIT

The Trust has established a framework for clinical governance that incorporates a well-developed clinical audit programme.

The post holder will be expected to take part in developing clinical audit activities and in achieving clinical governance objectives in accordance with agreed Directorate and Corporate Clinical Governance programmes. These build on the considerable progress already made by the Trust in clinical audit and continuous quality improvement.

In support of the above activity, the Trust has a well-established Clinical Audit Department and there is access to statistical support from a statistician. Time is allocated for clinical governance

Qualifications
Essential

• Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at time of appointment
• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• Successful completion of MRCS by time of interview
• Able to provide evidence of satisfactory completion of ATLS at the time of interview

Clinical Skills
Essential

• Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems
• Ability to prioritise clinical need
• Demonstrates appropriate technical and clinical competence and evidence of the development of diagnostic skills and clinical judgement
• Validated logbook documentation of surgical exposure to date
• Exposure of an aptitude for surgery - good manual dexterity

Desirable

• Shows aptitude for practical skills, e.g. hand-eye coordination, dexterity, visuospatial awareness
• A practical course devoted entirely to orthopaedic casting techniques aimed at orthopaedic trainees

Research and Audit
Essential

• Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management and evidence-based practice
• Understanding of basic research principles, methodology and ethics, with a potential to contribute to research
• Evidence of participation in audit
