We are seeking to recruit a number of enthusiastic, innovative, driven Acute Physicians to join our team of dedicated Acute Physicians to drive quality improvement and contribute to the implementation of the new Acute Care Model being developed for the move into our new Acute Hospital The Midland Metropolitan University Hospital opening in 2023.

Main duties of the job

We are passionate about our ethos and philosophy and are driven to provide the best care for our acutely unwell patients. Our Acute Medical Unit holds the largest footprint- including 14 Level 1 beds, 54 AMU beds, a 32 bedded Short Stay unit and a large independent Medical Ambulatory Area. The new state of the art acute hospital in Grove Lane, Smethwick will bring together all acute services onto one site.

About us

Please note, there is also an opportunity to apply for the Clinical Lead role in Acute Medicine and this can be discussed with the Clinical Director.

Acute Medicine within the Trust has developed from scratch over a matter of years and is a highly valued influential specialty which is heavily involved in the new hospital model and strategy.

Job description
Job responsibilities

We have developed many opportunities to keep admission rates low with our virtual clinics, ambulatory unit as well as front door frailty. We are delivering acute medicine via point of care diagnostics including POCUS within the community in our novel project EPICENTRE.

The Acute Medicine department is renown for being the most popular site for Acute medical trainees and is a national centre for POCUS training and accreditation. We have the first dedicated AMU Clinical Skills Lab within the UK which houses a simulator, CVP, LP and Chest drain training equipment and won a National Award in 2017 for innovation. Trainees receive training in USS, Echo, leadership, and are involved heavily in teaching and education. Courses run by the unit are IMPACT, USS at the Front Door, Golden Hour and the AMAN training day. Feedback from the Foundation trainees is the unit is one of the best training within the Trust. This has been credited to the teamwork family ethos that has been created and sustained. The department has been recognised with local, national and international awards/recognition of work, services and innovation including the more recent well being work which was commended by HPMA during a very challenging year.

The successful candidates will be within 6 months of CCT in Acute Internal Medicine. We would be keen to offer development for new Consultants especially within the fields of leadership, management, education as well as research. We are keen to raise the profile of research within acute medicine and we have an Acute Medicine research fellow looking at acute care provision within the community. A specialty session outside acute medicine is guaranteed and we are willing to look at joint specialty job plans including frailty, toxicology and intensive care medicine. We are also very keen to accommodate flexible working. All new consultants join the Trusts well established New Consultants Leadership Program.

The single-site Acute Hospital will benefit from co-located specialist services which will support the new Emergency Department with dedicated imaging facility and Assessment Units. It will provide state-of-the-art treatment and care for patients from Sandwell and across the region and will become the civic heart of the area and a point of pride for the community.

The Trust is a key partner with the local commissioning group and the local authorities in the Right Care Right Here program, which seeks to deliver a redevelopment of local health services. The program includes one of the largest investments in the UK with new facilities in both the acute and community sectors. Included within this is the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.

The Trust has a very good reputation for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with strong links to the University of Birmingham, Aston University and Health Education West Midlands. The Trust is home to a number of University departments and we are developing research capacity in a number of specialties in the Trust including Acute Medicine so there are opportunities to become involved in research activities.

Birmingham is a vibrant, multi-cultural city and it is a very exciting place to live and work. It has a population of 1.1 million, the youngest in Europe. Its residents speak over 140 languages and blend different cultures and nationalities with history that is rich in industrial heritage.

The area boasts affordable housing with popular residential districts such as Harborne and Sutton Coldfield an easy commute to either of the main hospital sites. There are a number of very good schools and colleges locally (including a number of independent and grammar schools such as the King Edwards Schools). Birmingham is a very green city with more than 8,000 acres of green space including impressive parks around the city. Due to our central location and good motorway connections we are in easy reach of a number of beautiful rural locations including the Peak District, Cannock Chase, the Lickey Hills and the Cotswolds. The Trust offers a competitive relocation package.
