We are seeking to appoint a dynamic candidate to join our existing consultant team working within an exceptional multidisciplinary team at University Hospital Southampton. The 10PA post will cover endocrinology, diabetes and general internal medicine, with a focus on further developing tertiary specialist endocrinology, developing a sustainable GIM inpatient model and building on integration with community diabetes services in Southampton.

Appointed candidate will join our thriving teaching hospital and an award winning team of 5 existing diabetes and endocrine consultants, 2 academic consultants, 2 GIM consultants, a consultant pharmacist, 6 diabetes specialist nurses, 3 endocrine nurses and 2 specialist dietitians.

Job responsibilities

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The appointees will work across endocrinology, diabetes and general internal medicine providing senior clinical leadership and will be particularly encouraged to contribute towards research development, undergraduate and postgraduate education at Southampton School of Medicine and education programmes delivered internally at UHS or to primary care healthcare professionals.
  • Along with three existing consultant colleagues, appointees will form a new winter pressures GIM team which will cover 18 weeks of GIM every winter to ensure we continue to build a safe and sustainable inpatient medical model in Southampton.
  • The appointee will support GIM for 10 weeks per year covering the winter pressures GIM team and providing planned cover for the two existing general medical teams.
  • Each post will also provide 32 weeks of pure diabetes and endocrine specialty cover which will include general and specialty endocrinology, inpatient diabetes, specialist diabetes clinics, community diabetes advice and contribute to specialist advice and guidance both internally and externally.
  • Specialist endocrinology and diabetes clinical work will be based on appointees interests, skills and experience. 0.5PA of acute medical on call activity is needed to be covered by the appointee.

We are looking for candidates who are

  • fully registered with the GMC and already have a CCT in Diabetes and Endocrinology with GIM or be within 6 months of CCT.
  • Candidates should have good leadership skills, always be patient focused and excellent communicators.
