Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine with a special interest in Anaesthesia (or any other relevant specialty).

United Lincolnshire Hospital Trust have vacancies for full-time Consultants in Intensive Care Medicine. This Consultant post will be based at Pilgrim Hospital. The duties include supporting the intensive care rota in line with the Intensive Care Society guidelines on the provision of Intensive Care service (GPICS).

Main duties of the job

Pilgrim Hospital Intensive Care Unit is a mixed level 3 / level 2 facility providing comprehensive critical care to all adult inpatients at Pilgrim Hospital.

The unit currently consists of a maximum 12 beds which are used flexibly between level 2 & level 3, (Currently funded for 5 level 3 and 4 level 2 beds) beds. The unit is a new refurbishment via a capital project worth approximately £4 million and was completed in April 2012. This includes new patient care and staff facilities and equipment and the introduction of an electronic patient management system on Critical Care (MetaVision).

The Critical Care Unit is staffed by the Department of Critical Care on an 8 Consultant ICM rota. The main duties of the post will be in Intensive Care with supplemental weekday daytime DDC duties in Anaesthesia or another relevant speciality (Emergency medicine, Acute medicine, Renal or Respiratory medicine) by agreement.

The appointee will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of the department.

Job responsibilities

There is a requirement to participate fully with the clinical governance programme the department and to undertake annual appraisals to support ongoing revalidation. There is a rolling half day audit/clinical governance/CPD programme including morbidity/mortality meetings.

The appointee will be expected to take an active part in the education and training for both the ICM/Anaesthesia trainees and other members of staff at Pilgrim Hospital.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • Eligible for entry/entered on the specialist register of the General Medical Council in ICM, Anaesthesia or another appropriate speciality
  • FRCA/FFICM or equivalent
  • CCT in ICM, Anaesthesia or appropriate speciality within 6 months of CCT at date of interview

Desirable

  • MD/ PhD or Higher/academic qualification
  • Dual/Joint CCT in Anaesthesia and ICM (or equivalent)
  • DICM(UK) or European Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine
  • Membership of ICS

Experience
Essential

  • Training and experience in ITU compatible with higher training in Intensive Care Medicine.

Desirable

  • Advanced level of experience in ICU
  • Dual accreditation in anaesthesia and intensive care
  • Experience at Consultant level within the NHS

Governance
Essential

  • An understanding of clinical governance and clinical effectiveness
  • Willingness to work as a member of the teams and to share administrative responsibility
  • Compliance with appraisal, job planning and revalidation

Desirable

  • Familiarity with issues of service organisation an development
  • Some administrative experience
