10 Programmed Activities

This is a replacement post for a full-time Consultant in Haematology
with a special interest in Transfusion Medicine. It is a joint
appointment between NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) and Kings
College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KCH). The post will be based
at King’s College Hospital and NHSBT Tooting Centre. There will be
an average of 8 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with
the remainder being allocated for Supporting Professional and/or
other Activities. The On-Call commitment will be a 1:10 (B) on-call
commitment on the Haematology Red Cell rota (haemoglobinopathies,
other benign blood disorders, blood transfusion, coagulation
disorders, paediatric haematology), which includes ward rounds on
weekends and on call for NHSBT on a 1:6 (B) basis.

The post-holder will be the medical lead for transfusion in the Trust
and undertake General Haematology clinics for the Trust. As
transfusion lead the post holder will work within a team consisting
of senior laboratory staff, transfusion practitioners, patient blood
management practitioner, and quality assurance officer. Support is
provided by a Haematology SpR. As a member of the Hospital
Transfusion Committee (HTC), the post holder will participate in
regulatory and clinical governance issues; they will also take an
active role in MHRA and UKAS accreditation.

There is significant flexibility to develop specific interests within this
field, in accordance with other consultants’ special interests and also
with the Kings Health Partners (KHP) development plans. There will
be opportunities to develop and lead apheresis services supporting
the Sickle Cell Centre of Excellence as well as Bone Marrow
Transplant programme. The individual is expected to play an active
role in the general workload of the department, and have a
significant role in teaching and training of junior medical staff.

The post-holder will provide expert advice on reference red cell
immunohaematology (RCI) specifically and transfusion medicine
generally for NHSBT providing advice as part of a national rota and
medical leadership for the RCI reference laboratory in Tooting in
London. You will also participate in the medical consultant duty rota
to cover diagnostic laboratories for NHSBT by day time and in the
consultant rota providing 24/7 advice on transfusion medicine. You
would be expected to participate in clinical research in transfusion
medicine and local, regional & national audit and quality
improvement initiatives in transfusion medicine. You would also
participate in teaching and training regionally and nationally of
medical and non-medical staff and contribute to the teaching
programmes for Haematology and Transfusion Medicine Specialty
Registrars preparing for the part I and part II of the FRCPath
examination, including visitors from overseas.

NHSBT was established as a Special Health Authority for England
and Wales in October 2005 by the merger of UK Transplant (UKT)
with the National Blood Authority (NBA) – made up of the National
Blood Service (NBS) and the Bio Products Laboratory (BPL). The remit
of NHSBT is to provide a reliable efficient supply of blood, organs
and associated services to the NHS. BPL has subsequently left NHSBT
to form an independent organisation.
