Job Details

Are you a Consultant in Ophthalmology?

Join our team on the beautiful Isle of Man, where we are aiming to become the best small Island based health and care system!

If you would like to achieve a fantastic work-life balance with a professionally satisfying job, then this could be the job for you!

About the hospital and service

We are looking for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with an interest in the medical treatment of retinal disease.  The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the existing consultant to develop and maintain the ophthalmology service on the Isle of Man.  The team will participate in all aspects of ophthalmology outpatient care including the management of general, glaucoma, medical retina and cataract patients.

This role will focus upon the development and provision of a whole medical retina service including treatment of wet ARMD, retinal vascular disease, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis etc. You will be involved in the implementation of the community diabetic eye screening service across the Island along with hospital eye service provision.

The Ophthalmology Department is presently providing general services for cataracts, glaucoma and medical retina diseases, with patients requiring tertiary care being transferred to Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Currently, wet ARMD reviews and intra-vitreal injection clinics are held on the Island under the auspices of Aintree University Hospital (as part of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) which provides remote consultant supervision for the locum Associate Specialist who runs this clinic at Noble’s Hospital on Fridays.

By joining us you will be stepping away from NHS pressures and demands, as the Island’s healthcare system is similar but separate to the UK NHS.

The post is based at Noble’s Hospital, a modern general district hospital on the outskirts of the Island's capital, Douglas.

Our team

You will be working as one of two consultants with a supportive and friendly team comprising two middle grade doctors and nursing support.

What can this role offer me?

You will also have access to the fantastic training and development facilities we have, including an onsite training centre and simulation suite.  We recognise the need for all medical staff on the Island to maintain connections with medicine in the United Kingdom, and we provide generous study leave with pay and expenses to attend approved conferences and workshops.

About the Island and relocating

On the Island you can enjoy a fantastic quality of life, and an excellent work-life balance! There are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities; so if you like walking, mountain biking, sailing or kayaking, you will have lots of places to explore!

There are lots of great cafes, bars and restaurants, and you can enjoy the Island’s real sense of community. The Island is well connected to the UK, and you will also benefit from low income tax rates (20% maximum rate).

To find out more about the Island and the lifestyle you could enjoy here, take a look at Locate Isle of Man’s guide to moving to the Isle of Man here.

If you are relocating or returning to the Island, you can benefit from the Insurance Holiday Scheme, which allows you to apply for a refund on your NI contributions for your 1st year of living here.  To see how this scheme could benefit you, and to find out more about relocating to the Isle of Man, visit www.locate.im

Interview expenses and a relocation package of up to £7,000 based on receipts is available for this role.  Housing assistance is also available where the Department will pay the difference between your current mortgage/rent bill, and that of your new accommodation on the Isle of Man, up to a maximum of £250 per month.  To find out more about our relocation package, download the leaflet below.
