Three days per week, to allow for clinical duties.

At Macmillan, we won’t rest, and we won’t settle for anything other than the best possible support for people with cancer. There are currently almost 3 million people living with cancer in the UK. This is set to grow to 4 million by 2030, and we face a future where 1 in 2 of us will be diagnosed at some point in our lives.

We provide a range of services to help patients get the support they need, and we influence the public, frontline services and key decisions makers. Our advocacy work plays a critical part in getting the right care and support for people living with cancer. We know that research plays a vital role in helping us understand how we can best support everyone with cancer to live life as fully as they can and we are at the forefront of understanding the needs and experiences of people living with cancer through our public health data analysis, evaluating services and healthcare economics, conducting surveys, funding academic research and working closely with people affected by cancer and our professionals and partners on the ground.

We have a heavy responsibility to challenge inequalities in cancer services and patient experiences in our advocacy. We have established equity, diversity and inclusion as an organisational objective, developed a new cross-organisational strategy and put in place governance structures to hold us to account for the progress we want to see inside Macmillan and in all our external work.

There is now a unique opportunity to join us in the role of Chief Medical Officer, to provide medical leadership to our Centre of Clinical Expertise and to give strategic clinical guidance to internal and external stakeholders; and build credibility with clinical audiences so Macmillan is seen as a clinically informed organisation. We are looking for an inspirational, forward thinking and inclusive strategic leader who can be a visible figurehead for Macmillan professionals, who can lead in line with our values of With Heart, With Strength and With Ambition.

Maintaining a clinical role, of good standing with the GMC and with a background in a relevant specialist clinical area, you will have experience of driving change and be clearly able to articulate today’s and tomorrow’s needs for clinicians to support best outcomes for people living with cancer. You will have strong influencing and engagement skills, so that you are able to engage with senior clinical and non-clinical stakeholders.

We are striving to do everything we can to ensure that our workforce is representative of the people we support, and those who support us. We advocate for being an inclusive organisation, where everyone can feel that they belong and where there are no barriers to success. To reflect our commitments on equity, diversity and inclusion, we are open to exploring job share options with candidates.

We strongly encourage people of different age groups, of different ethnically diverse backgrounds, of different religions, beliefs or no faith, and who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and non-binary people, veterans, parents, and individuals with disabilities to apply. Macmillan is an employer which welcomes everyone to our team to join us and fulfil their potential with us. If you need reasonable workplace adjustment at any point in the application or interview process, please let us know.
