The South West Liver Unit https://www.plymouthhospitals.nhs.uk/swlu provides comprehensive medical and surgical treatment for all types of liver and biliary pathology. Tertiary services are provided for the region of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset including full liver transplant assessment plus all aspects of pre and post- transplant care, emergency and elective TIPS for variceal bleeding and ascites, a full range of treatments for primary liver tumour management and management of complex autoimmune hepatitis and viral hepatitis and HIV co-infection.

The SWLU aims to provide the highest quality, safe and effective clinical care to patients with liver and biliary diseases. The SWLU gained Royal College of Physicians Improving Quality in Liver Services (IQILS) level 1 Accreditation in November 2020 and successfully assessed level 2 accreditation in February 2022. (https//www.iqils.org IQILS). All members of the department actively contribute to clinical governance, audit and service improvement projects and support the units ongoing IQILS accreditation programme.

We are looking to appoint a Consultant Hepatologist committed to delivering high-quality services to patients with liver disease in the South West Liver Unit. Our Department is committed to delivering high quality liver services to both our local population and tertiary services including pre and post liver transplant care, liver cancer treatment and TIPS to patients with liver disease in the South West region. The department provides a supportive multi-disciplinary working environment, where sub-specialty interests can be pursued. The South West Liver Unit provides a specialist pre and post liver transplant programme with close links to Kings College Hospital. The successful candidate will share inpatient and outpatient duties with existing Hepatologists to provide the highest quality care people with all forms of liver disease. Endoscopy interests will also be supported.

There are also additional opportunities to support undergraduate medical education at University of Plymouth Peninsula Medical School.

About us

The Hepatology Department at University Hospitals Plymouth (Derriford Hospital) has experienced rapid expansion over the past 12 years. It is now one of the biggest and busiest in the South of England offering hepatology services to a local population in excess of 500,000 and providing tertiary services to the South West Peninsula population of around 2 million. Liver surgery has experienced similar rapid growth and the close working with medical hepatology culminated in the development of the South West Liver Unit (SWLU) in 2009.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential

  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • On the GMC Specialist Register for hepatology / gastroenterology and general (internal) medicine or eligible for admission within six months of interview

Desirable

 

  • Higher degree
  • Evidence of sub-specialty or other specific training

Experience
Essential

 

  • Able to independently manage patients with complex liver disease
  • Broad experience in all aspects of specialist hepatology, including liver transplantation

Desirable

 

  • Able to develop a sub-specialty area of expertise within hepatology
  • Skilled endoscopist, competent at therapeutic upper GI endoscopy including the management of complex GI bleeding
