This post is for a one year clinical fellowship in Nephrology and Acute Medicine based at Northampton General Hospital.

The appointee will work across all aspects of Nephrology and will take part in the on call rota for Acute Medicine.

This post is suitable for doctors wishing to pursue a career in Nephrology who wish to gain further experience of the speciality before starting Higher Specialist Training.

Northampton General has an excellent reputation for training junior doctors and a long tradition of those doctors taking up Consultant posts with us. We also have a very high success rate in our Clinical Fellows achieving appointment to their chosen training programmes.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will also take part in the Acute Medical Take and on call cover. This is a 1 in 10 shift for nights with two SpRs on each night. In addition there are 1 in 20 shifts for long-days on take Mon-Thurs, Fri - Sun, twilight shifts and ward cover day shifts Sat-Sun. We have provided a much safer level of overnight cover at middle grade by increasing the number of our SpRs from 11 to 20. All the other Acute Medical duties are therefore 1 in 20 so our SpRs spend a much greater proportion of their time in their chosen specialty.

About us

The Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust is situated within walking distance of the town centre and is the designated major accident and emergency centre in the district providing a full range of acute services. It serves a population of nearly 400,000.

Our vision is to become a 'DGH Plus', providing all the secondary care services normally found in a district general hospital, including emergency care, planned care, maternity care, diagnostic and therapy services. In addition we also provide specialized services for a wider population including designated regional cancer services, interventional cardiology, renal medicine, plastic surgery and vascular surgery

On-site specialities include General Medicine, Paediatrics, ENT, Accident and Emergency, Intensive Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Rheumatology, Plastic surgery, Dermatology as well as General and Orthopaedic Surgery. The X-ray Department is adjacent to Accident and Emergency and its facilities include diagnostic ultrasound and CT and MRI Scanning. There is a direct link between the CT Room and the Neurosurgical Department at the Oxford University Hospitals (OUH), Oxford to allow rapid exchange of information and advice

Job description
Job responsibilities

The post holder will work alongside the team of Consultants, SpRs, junior medical staff and specialist nurses to optimise the running of Finedon Ward. The SpRs will organise their own rota for ward cover taking into account GIM commitments and leave.

The post-holder will work across all aspects of the service but will mainly be based on Finedon Ward and caring for patients with predominantly renal conditions. There will be close supervision by the consultants. The key aim will be to develop a broad based knowledge in nephrology as well as practical procedural skills.

The successful candidate will be allocated an educational and clinical supervisor and encouraged to complete training assessments in line with other trainees at the same level. Educational supervision will be provided and opportunities to develop further experience of nephrology will be available in specialist clinics such as PD/HD/Tolvaptan/Advance kidney care/transplant. The training programme is based on the JRCPTB core curriculum for Nephrology but will be specifically tailored for each trainee to complement their specialist training to date and ensure the programme meets the educational needs of the appointee.

We wish to appoint a candidate who has a good background in general medicine and who is interested in developing an interest in all aspects of nephrology. The experience offered should greatly enhance a candidates appointment to Higher Specialist Training in Nephrology.

The majority of training will be on-the-job with close involvement of the consultants.

The Nephrology department has specialist weekly teaching sessions run by the middle grades and Consultants.

There is a dedicated IMT3 course that SCF are welcome to attend
